First of all, most of us know that Macs run faster then MS Wincrap. That being the case, why does it take twice as long to finish a WU on an Apple. It makes no sense to me other then the software is bad! Secondly, I can't figure out for the life of me why Seti would hand over their project to Boinc with all the issues they seem to be having??!! Every upgrade brings more problems, not solutions. Here's my newest since upgrading to 4.43: "Get_local_network_info(): gethostbyname failed"....what the hell does it mean and how to I fix it. Thanks to anyone who can help! MacStef |

Relax MacStef. BOINC isn't bad software but it is still evolving, it isn't heavily optimzed for any of the platforms either. However, there are third parties that have optimized the code. The original SETI project had its startup problems too. SETI BOINC will stabilze eventually as well. 1.) Don't worry about "Get_local_network_info(): gethostbyname failed. If your computer name shows in your computer list on your account page, everything is good. 2.) Go to http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html You can download otimized BOINC clients and an "altivec" optimized SETI App that will improve your performance. (Use at your own risk, but many of us have used them for a long time without problems.) If you have questions about them, please ask in the Team MacNN forums, where you will get quicker support. Visitors are welcome, you don't have to belong to the team. I think you'll be pleased with the results of the optimized clients. (the optimized code is all "original" source code but compiled with the latest GCC compilers and xTools.) You will need to be running either OS 10.3.9 or 10.4.x for the optimized BOINC clients, but the Optimized SETI app will work with anything greater then 10.3.1. ![]() Team MacNN - The best Macintosh team ever. |

It's hard to relax when I come from a Mac background my entire life and all of a sudden Seti one of my favorite charities switches to this boinc. Which is crashing my Mac, taking twice as long to crunch on Macs as it does on WinTels. It's crazy to me why Seti would do such a think, but water under the bridge. I was beta testing Einstein for you guys, but its only at about 40%. Needs to be fixed! I will try agin after you guys fix that as well. But I was going to try one of your CLI Clients, the problem is I'm not sure which one. I know I have a G4 DP 1GHz w/1.5 GB Ram running MSX 10.3.9, but not sure about the regular and the superbench. Also there are no installation instructions. I'm not a farmer but I am not a DOS person either....(commandline). Grew up with Macs, perfer the GUIs, it's what has always made Apples better then the pther guys! So if you could guide me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate, Shaktai! Thanks in advance! MacStef |
