Made up words and different dialects are fine, but is there any of us here that are fluent in Klingon and brave enough to admit it?

Message 117537 - Posted: 2 Jun 2005, 13:12:47 UTC - in response to Message 117493.

A few local slang terms from Western Pennsylvania aka "Pittsburghese":

  • yunz - replacement for: "you all" - "Where are yunz going?"
  • gumband - replacement for "rubber band"
  • still - replacement for "steel"
  • Hoopieland - replacement for "West Virginia"
  • worsh - replacement for "wash"

There are hundreds of these regional terms in this area with several books out on how to decipher the native "Picksburgher" language and terminology.

What about esliberty[sp]? My last boss was a "Picksburgher"

Close, it's "Sliberty". That actually sounds better than some of the other pronounciation of various areas here. I'm not overly familiar with the East Liberty area having grown up more on the "Norfsigh" of town.

The big one around here is the ever famous "babushka" which is used for a head scarf.

To properly speak Pittsburghese for non-natives, I swear you have to be drunk for at least a week straight. LOL.

To truly explore, one must keep an open mind...

'cast kick a bow aggen a woe an yed it till thee bost it'

Anyone translate that? Its easier if you say it out loud and get a feel for the dialect.

I glide upon the evening and dance upon the dawn with Sirius asmy guide and Canopus asmy friend

Some fear the dark but with friends like Orion,Cygnus and Andromeda one needs no fear

Very true, however, most words become established and will no longer be considered made-up. It's like all religions are or were cults at one time (I'm sure there are a few other people on this board that think of them all as cults).

IMO slang is just a step or two from acceptance, unless it is just hella stupid ;)

Still looking for something profound or inspirational to place here.

There are dictionaries that contain 'txt language' now and people are even studying it at universities.

The species of Chicken in question is called RHODE ISLAND RED.. nor ROAD. While they are amongst the larger of the chicken breds they are not and never have been as large as a man.

The picture you are using as an avatar is listed on the Urban Legends Web site if you really care. :)
