i can turn my seti classic on and off without causing windwos errors. boinc is unable to do this on my win98 machines it almost always causes windows errors when i shut boinc down im not asking for advice on how to fix this because its not my problem its boinc's mabye im just here to vent about how "well" the boinc application works one would think that with open source that it wouldent be so hard to resolve these issues but mabye the issue shutting boinc down does not bother the seti staff because it still does their work? ohh heres a idea also mabye make boinc open source for non profit org only. why should the businesses that are going to exploit the boinc software for monetary gain be allowed to use it for free?? theres about 20 kmore things i can find wrong with boinc atm but to save my own aggression i wont go into it |

I remember when I first installed the CLI version of Classic it did the same thing...and I had to download a file called default.pif and throw it in the windows directory. BOINC4.25 also seems to need this file. The file can be found here http://members.home.nl/marcel.zuiderveld/. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Why do people, especially Newbies, consistantly want SETI to step back in time just to accommodate their 20th century technology? Why can't they just join the rest of us and SETI in the 21st century and crunch in a happy manner? >:-/ L8R.... On this machine I have Win95, Win98, Win2K, XP, two different flavours of DOS (yes, DOS) and FreeBSD UNIX -- and maybe NT server tucked away somewhere as well. ... and I can run them all at the same time. |

I just click on File, then Exit and it shuts down with no errors. If you are running Win98 "A", I suggest that you upgrade to SE (Second Edition) or something else that's newer. You would have thought that Lady Jane Gray would have realised there are thousands of Win 98 user out here and if shutting down had been a problem it would have been reported before....... one 98 not working, lots of 98 working, conclusion..........? |

With VMware can you run a copy of Boinc in your base OS ie:XP and one in a client OS ie:2K at the same time? and have them both doing WU's and reporting them? I really need to get this home office organised so i can find something, looking for my copies of VMware and finding other stuff i have been looking for :) arghh frustrating :P Wiki de BOINC |

It worked well, and did plenty of crunching - just look under my stats at "fileserv.domain.actdsltmp" I even had BOINC running on an old Win95 box (compaq.domain.actdsltmp), but shut it down because it was consuming a lot of power and missing deadlines (200MHZ CPU doesn't do too wonderfully when its paired with bad RAM). > mabye im just here to vent about how "well" the boinc application works > Go ahead. > one would think that with open source that it wouldent be so hard to resolve > these issues but > mabye the issue shutting boinc down does not bother the seti staff because it > still does their work? > BOINC is not necissarily programmed and maintained by the administrators and staff at SETI@Home. > ohh heres a idea also mabye make boinc open source for non profit org only. > why should the businesses that are going to exploit the boinc software for > monetary gain be allowed to use it for free?? > Why not charge businesses for Linux, too? > theres about 20 kmore things i can find wrong with boinc atm but to save my > own aggression i wont go into it > I have plenty of gripes about BOINC as well, but if I find them too irksome, I can just remove the program from my machines. Most of them have to do with the GUI, which can be replaced (BOINCView, anyone?). BOINC Wiki Gideontech BOINC team! |

You can, but I doubt that there would be any real advantage -- you'd crunch two work units at the same time, but you'd be dividing clock cycles between the host and the guest machines. Plus the overhead. But, if BOINC needs testing, this is a superb tool. |

Mostly NOOBs that go about yelling and complaining instead of finding out how to fix the problem. And the problems IS their PC is screwed or their OS is corrupted (98% of the time). Any heavy user know how weak Win98 was and how easy it was for it to get corrupted. Not to add to the fact that there have been no new security patches or OS updates to Win98 for a long time. The other 1% of the problems wasn't really a problem, just misreported..... |
