Does anybody have any experience about installing 4.25 over 4.19? Any success stories? Does 4.19 have to be uninstalled first? Are WUs lost?

I just know 4.19 > 4.22 by now. You have to uninstall first, and nothing was lost here.
But that's just me (the no-loss), I heard different elsewhere, but nit often. Better save the directory as a Backup somewhere else.

You should uninstall 4.19 before installing 4.25. Versions 4.2x have a very different core program. The current work should be preserved and restart where they left off.
NOTE: 4.2x can be a bit slow to start the first time, so be patient if the data doesn't show up immediately.

Too be safe make a copy of the Boinc folder (I put mine on the Desktop). This will make it easier to recover the in progress WU should the worst happen.

How 'stable' is this? I uninstalled 4.19 and tried to install 4.25 only to get this:

http://www.ssl.berkeley.edu/pipermail/boinc_projects/2005-March/000831.html

I'm pleased to announce the 4.25 release of the BOINC client for Windows.

The highlights for this release are:

1. A MSI based installer, for large scale deployments.
2. A new task based GUI which utilizes the wxWidget cross platform
framework, so we could use the same GUI code for the rest of the platforms.
3. Installation options for running in the shared and service execution
modes.
4. A more comprehensive set of GUI RPC's for management of the daemon.
5. Abilities to suspend/resume projects.
6. Abilities to suspend/resume results, even ones which haven't started
executing yet.
7. Abilities to abort results.
8. Abilities to abort transfers.
9. Abilities to add URLs to the GUI Interface on a project specific
basis.
10. Supports multiple messages returned from the scheduler.

We would like to thank the Alpha testers and the various community members
who reported bugs and helped us smooth out the rough edges.

We are still cooking the Linux, Solaris, and Mac versions which should be
showing up in the next week or so.

What's good:
1. At least we have a version that 'remembers' the disconnected setting, phew, was it that difficult?
2. Wow, i can suspend single projects and even wu's, that's good.
3. Multilanguage interface (not really for me).
4. You don't have to manually correct the host venue anymore.

Unfortunately that's all that's good on this new release.

What sucks:
1. The big 'tool tip' (?) window to the left is not hideable and is wasting valueable screen space. Where to stop this annoyance?
2. The window position is not saved.
3. Last version (4.19) i could doubleclick the icon to show and doubleclick again to hide. Now i have to choose 'Hide' in the menu. Wow.
4. Where is the progress bar?
5. No context menu on projects. Have to use the big left annoying panel.
6. Can't sort columns by anything.

Let's see how much more i find before i'm not allowed to edit this post anymore.
Don't want to be a spoil sport, but i expected more...

Aloha, Uli

So is it safe to run 4.25 since it's stable now? I notice some projects still list 4.19 under their download page. I run Seti/Predictor/LHC/Climate/Einstein on my pc's. Will this version cause me any problems with any of these projects or should I just stick with 4.19.
Thanks

The big blue bar on the WORK tab forces all the information off the side of the screen so you can't see what's going on all at once :\

How so? mines not picking up the School setting I had to manually edit in before. Guess I'll have to re-edit it again

Really? Ok, maybe it simply continued with my (already manually corrected) client_state.xml. Then it's not 4:6 but 3:6 :/

For all of us, who don't really like the new BOINC manager: check out BoincView at http://boincview.amanheis.de/.

It can do everything manager can and more. Plus it looks really nice.

I was ready to post my thoughts on ver 4.25 but Ulrich did as well as I could have. I especially would like to see the tool tip area "hideable," the return of the progress bar, and the ability to sort columns.

Thank you for all the work done so far.

Somehow, the list of dislikes is longer the the one of "likes"...

It is good that the new version finally remembers the "Disable BOINC network access" setting - finally I do not have to remember to turn off the modem on start-up. Another great addition is the ability to suspend individual WUs, which will help meating the deadlines more accurately. I am, however, seriously considering going back to 4.19. The reasons are:

1) Unable to sort the individual columns - was a very heavily-used feature, especially when sorting by deadline and progress to see where to give priority
2) The offending sidebar stealing a lot of screen real estate - come on, even Microsoft allows hiding the sidebar in Explorer...
3) Graphical prograss indicators are gone - they were invaluable for getting an overview of the progress situation at a glance - now I have to wade though a jumble of numbers...
4) Disk usage diagrams are gone! Especially disconserting is the absence of persantage status from the total allocated BOINC space.
5) Column widths are not saved across sessions. Frustrating.
6) Context sensitive menues are gone - I understand that the sidebar has overtaken that role, but menues are more intuitive and require less clicks to have the job done - right-click an entry, then release the button to activate an option; now you have to click the entry, move the mouse and then click the option.

It seems that more useful functions were removed from the frontend, that were added. Pity, really.

Well I am perfectly happy with 4.19 but I guess I will have to upgrade. Does anyone know if 4.25 will be become mandatory soon for any of the BOINC projects?
