Which one? The original series or the new one? I first assumed you meant the original, which is so disco-pop-70s with the shiny good guys and window-dressing women I sometimes wonder what I ever saw in it (I guess, despite all that, it is still fun).

Heh, I was referring to tha origial 70's one. THAT new "Battlestar Galactica" is suppposed to have made Starbuck into a girl. I guess you could say that the original was kinda disco-pop-70's, but it was original.

I've noticed that only two science fiction series discussed organized religion at all.

ST:DS9, owing to the location, had to discuss Bajor and the Prophets, while they never truly talked about Klingon divinity (It was alluded to a few times, but not really discussed). The other time was one episode of Babylon 5 - If memory serves, the Lieutenant was reciting Kaddish (Could any Babylonians confirm/deny this?).

Otherwise, sci-fi space has been the non-theist frontier...

Both the Battlestar Galactica series also get into religion.

The first had episodes referring to a monotheistic god, showed "angels" that were highly advanced non-corporeal beings, and one was a "fallen angel" that an onscreen reference indicated was somehow connected with the Cylons ("Count Iblis" had the same voice as the Cylon Imperious Leader).

The new Battlestar Galactica puts the humans still worshipping the pantheon of Greek gods, the "Lords of Kobol", and at least a couple of the humanform cylons believe in a monotheistic god. The Cylon in the new Baltar's head is slowly converting him from atheism to the belief that he is an instrument of god's divine will.

By the way, I was a big fan of the original series when I was in junior high, but nevertheless, despite a few criticisms, the new series has really won me over. I highly encourage everyone familiar with the old to give it a chance, at least for a couple episodes. Also, check out the IMDB database for the user comments on the new series. I found they unanimously came to the same opinion I did: really skeptical at first, but the depth of story and the all-too-human characters really win people over.

I'm thinking the explaination for that is simple. How many sci-fi fans believe in god?

Now ask yourself how many of those want to be exposed to the religion of another culture?

So what church do you attend that says a half-hearted belief is sufficent to win you a seat in heaven?

Lost of folks feel like you. They know the stories of religion are absurd and quite impossible, but feel it is better to err on the side of god than not. The problem is, not one organized religion accepts that train of thought, and would condemn you as a non-believer.

Now if you have some proof of the existence of god......I'm all ears

Well, there are probably no churches that really believe in half or partial belief. I haven't even been to church for over ten years. But it's just something that is part of my upbringing.

I guess that you could say that I just can't completely rule out the existance of god altogether, like many other people that were raised in my time. I'm just not, like I said, a Holy Roller.

I didn't take this to mean he has a half-hearted belief, but that he has questions, as we all should whether atheist or theist.

My organized religion (Baha‘i) does not require belief in either absurd or impossible "stories" in religious writings; and, in fact, resolves religious/scientific conflicts in favor of science.

I have sufficient "proof" for myself, but your attitude makes it clear that no discussion would ever sway you, so I won't waste my time.

I also have sufficient proof for myself, just through my continued exsistence.
After a total of 9 cardiac arrests, 2 Repiratory arrests(One just this year),I know that a higher power is involved in my being, souly because there is no cure for my condition (yet) and until the very late 90's there was not even a name.
Like I have said in other posts, unless you have been in the throws of death, most do not understand.I do not know a being other than God that offers Peace and contintment at Death.I have been there.

Without Suffering there would be no compassion.

Thank you Tom. I would say that your statement about having questions is a good explanation. Sometimes I just have problem taking religion too seriously. But I also sometimes feel the need to try to understand and respect religous (Christian) views about certain things.

I don't have anything against people that might be atheist though.

I just wanted to add that I parenthesized Christian cuz that's what I'm most familiar with.

Just as a point of discussion...

Atheist means you do not believe in a God or possibly a creation of a God.

Being an agnostic means you just aren't sure, ...you don't 'know', but you don't necessarily rule it out.

Methinks, in Alex's case, he is what you might call agnostic.

Nobody has anything against agnostics, .....do they?

Cause, at times, I wonder if I'm not agnostic.... as maybe anyone who has questions may be.
