Message 5742 - Posted: 9 Jul 2004, 18:59:11 UTC

During a lull in the work coming from SETI, I tried to sign up for Predictor@home, but after five days I am still waiting for my ID to be emailed to me, and the only email link I can find on their site is a dud.

Can't get on their message boards to ask why I haven't got the ID yet, because I need the ID to get on the message boards...

Does anyone know what is going on there, or how to get in touch with them? If not, I'll just give up and stick with SETI as the work seems to be flowing again.

From a message on the predictor front page.

"7/09/04
When you create your new account, you should receive an e-mail containing the account ID needed for activation of your Predictor account. If you do not receive this email within 1 hour or so, your or your ISP's spam filter might have blocked it. In this case do not try to create another account but send us an email at predictor AT scripps.edu. Please replace AT with @ in the actual email that you send us."

??? Was this meant to be a reply to my question? Because it makes no sense whatever in that context. (Nice graphics, though.)

Thanks for that Heffed, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there last time I looked!

[edit] Alas, the address predictor at scripps dot edu also bounces, so I still can't talk to them. They must be playing hard to get.

Did you try the address the link shows, instead of the actual link location?

I just ask because the link text says to write to predictor at ... But clicking the link gives you BOINC at .... Maybe try both addresses?

I did ... 'predictor at' and 'boinc at' both bounce. :(

I'll make a post over there referencing this post.

Edit: Posted. Someone on the predictor team should see it.

Okay, I e-mailed to both the Predictor at scripps dot edu and the boinc at scripps dot edu and received back confirmation that those e-mail addresses are working.

Sir Alan, not knowing your internet skill levels, I will just point out that the e-mails must be formated in standard e-mail format and not pasted as written.

It may be possible that your internet mail service is blocking both directions, or that your own junk mail settings are set so tight that they block both. If you are getting e-mail to and from seti, you should be able to get it to and from predictor. Double check your settings, and any "exclusions" that may be added for junk mail filters.

The best Macintosh team ever assembled.

Fine, that eliminates one possibility.

A reasonable point, but yes, I did realise that.

Doesn't look like it. I get all the usual rubbish which is flagged by Mailwasher Pro, but I don't delete anything unseen. My antivirus occasionally deletes the contents of dodgy emails and attachments, but the subject line is retained intact. If that lot get through, I doubt that my ISP is deleting anything.

My ID email from SETI (BOINC) turned up ok. I get notified when there is a posting to this topic.

The last bounce started thus (I have edited out my email address and part of my local machine's address):

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

[remainder edited out.]

The bounce from the BOINC address was much the same.

I've been away for the weekend so maybe I should try again. Thanks for your advice, everyone.

Hi Sir_Alan.

The Predictor has tried to mail you your ID, but apparently your inbox isn't functioning?

This is the reply they got from your ISP. (your email is substituted with "foo")

foo@foo.com: host relay1.scripps.edu[137.131.200.29] said: 550
5.2.1 foo@foo.com ... Mailbox disabled for this recipient

They suggest trying another email address.

That's really odd, because I only use the one address, and it's receiving plenty of other emails, including the one which just notified me of your posting.

I will try registering with another address (different domain but same ISP) and see what happens.

Thanks for your efforts to help solve this.
