Profile: Idle Layabout

Personal background
I'm a 30 something computer geek. I work at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. I pass my spare time by climbing mountains, kayaking, reading and cooking.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As with all major past discoveries, the existence of extraterrestrial life would once again force us to reevaluate our position in the universe, not only from a scientific, but also a religious viewpoint.

While any potential discovery would be phenomenally exciting, this should be tempered with the understanding that given the vast scale of the universe, any signal we detected would most likely come from a species long since past.

While depressing to consider, it may also be the case that the expanding shell of signals from a distant species concluded its journey across our solar system only hours before we started listening :-)

What is true however is that if we don't listen the possibility of failure is exactly 100%.
