Well, Nvidia have announced their new hardware.
Now i'm waiting for some reviews to see just how they actually perform.

Hi Grant,

Yep, I'm also waiting on the reviews.

According to what I have seen, I'm leaning toward a 3070 since it is supposed to have about twice the efficiency of the 2080 Ti. Cheapest 2080 Ti I saw was about $1400 bucks new on Newegg. The 3070 is supposed to be priced at about $500 bucks. :)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Keith,
I would much rather stay away from ANYTHING Google. I don't like their politics, or their spying, or their data stealing, etc., etc. I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine. I haven't used Google search in over a year. I won't use it, no matter what. I don't use any computer outside my house. Yeah, I know, my cell phone is Google, but I hate Apple even more. ;)
Have a great day! :)

. . Ahhh, a man after my own heart .... dislike Google, hate Apple ... :)

Greetings,

That is the main reason that I do EVERYTHING except gaming (World of Warcraft) in Linux and have for quite some time. Neither the SSD that holds my Winders boot or my new laptop have the spring version of Winders. My main tried to get it but barfed on it and it decided just to go with the security updates. My laptop just never tried getting it and it just got the security updates. Both are still running v1909.

Linux Mint updates and upgrades are so much easier and much less (non existent) nerve wracking than Winders. :)

Have a great day! :)

For alternative Linux browsers, try Brave and Vivaldi.

Hi Keith,

Well, this version of Firefox started having tabs crash. But, the whole browser never did.

I looked up how to install Vivaldi. Just gotta download it and use GDebi to install. I am now using it. :)

Thanks and have a great day! :)

Greetings,

Ok, I have no idea what the heck is going on with Firefox (Mozilla version)! It started acting up on me... AGAIN! I kept having tabs crash and then the whole browser crashing repeatedly. Soooooooo...

I looked for another browser. I tried one called Epiphany and that was crap. Instead of having bookmarks in separate folders, they were ALL in one drop down (no folders). No fragin organization AT ALL. So uninstalled that one and looked for another one. I found a Firefox Flathub) and decided to try it. It is virtually identical to the Mozilla Firefox. It is from Flatpak. We'll see if this one works properly. ;)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Siran, long time no type too. Since Canonical went to a Snap based distribution of Chromium in Ubuntu 20.04 and Mint 20.04 said no-way, hell no . . . . to ANY Snap apps, Mint 20 does not have access to Chromium.

However you can still install the latest Chrome browser with a direct download of the deb package from Google.

https://www.google.com/chrome/

Personally, I'm a little leery of the tie-in to Google with some of the Chrome features. Just one example is the default use of the Google DNS unless you know to change that...

Meanwhile, Firefox is a good feature rich alternative...

Keep searchin',
Martin

Hi Martin,

Long time.

See my post to Keith about Chrome and Google.

I have re-purposed one of my Pis and installed PiHole on it. It serves as my DNS server among other things. All computers, laptops, tablets and cells deal with the Pi before going out to the Internet. It has a MAJOR blacklist of advertisers that it blocks. As for the AV software, not using any. I've always been pretty careful about using the Internet. And If I see emails that I don't recognise, I delete them without opening them.

Have a great day! :)

In Linux, you have ClamAV as a anti-virus application. In most distro software catalogs as far as I know.

Hi Keith,

Long time no see. ;)

I just looked in the Software Manager and there's something like a dozen or more different things to install for ClamAV...

Uh oh, I see I have an update that needs doing. There's a red dot on my update manager.

I just upgraded to Linux Mint v20 Ulyana. So far, looking and doing great. Everything runs as they did in v19.3. I'm even back to using Firefox without the headaches it was giving when I changed to Chromium. Chromium disappeared so I decided to try Firefox again which didn't disappear. Good so far. :)

I sure wish there was a new and improved SETI@Home for us. I don't like seeing my stats stuck in limbo as they are, as everyone's are. :(

Have a great day! :)

Warning!

. . I was using Avast as my virus checker and everything has been very well for the last 4 years, but since it's last update several days ago it has taken a dislike to boinc.exe. I have tried to get it to see boinc.exe as an exception but it won't take and it continues to kill boinc.exe and manager, so in the end I had to remove it and go to another checker. The reason it gives for the antagonism to boinc.exe is "behaviour problem".

. . So just in case others are running Windows and relying on Avast keep an eye on it.

Stephen

:(

Hi Stephen,

I quit using those third party "free" AV programs. The last one I used was Avast and I got tired of it constantly harassing me to get the paid version. I use the built in security software in Windows 10, when I do run it only for gaming. I don't use any in Linux Mint. At least I don't think I am. I haven't even looked for any. I know it has a firewall and don't know it that is even being used. ;)

Have a great day! :)

The SSP has been updated today, July 14th. There's not much info on the page. I looked at my account stats and I still have 10 valid tasks listed. Go figure...

Ghia, that works for Windows, for Linux do:

The procedure that worked for me on Ubuntu 18.04.4:
(1) Download this file: https://crt.sh/?d=1720081
(2) Place "1720081.crt" in Home directory (e.g., move from desktop)
(3) sudo mv 1720081.crt /usr/local/share/ca-certificates
(4) sudo update-ca-certificates

Worked for my Mint.

Hi John,

That didn't work for me. A user called Walli came up with a much simpler procedure in this thread on Rosetta. It is late in the thread, just look for my responses to him and you will see the procedure he posts. One thing though, you need to find his post with the fixed Terminal command. There's a link to it. The forum does not allow backslashes and they are needed in the command to work.

Have a great day! :)

The are remedy procedures in this thread on Rosetta. There are procedures for both Windows and Linux. I'm not sure about Macs. I fixed mine with a Linux procedure yesterday. :)

Hi Siran, I didn't bother to do any bunkering or anything before the work finished. I just moved on to other projects. Yes, I was up near the top when there was work, but falling rapidly now. Computers aren't even visible at the project anymore since they haven't contacted the project for over 30 days.

If you are concerned about your positional standings, don't go looking at Boincstats if your computers haven't exported a single task credit in over 60 days. All your host credits will disappear shortly. That is how Willy has configured BoincStats. So expect a tremendous plummet in your standings.

Hi Keith,

Well, I don't think I have gone to BOINCStats but maybe a dozen times in the past 10 years or more. I just check standings here on SETI.

My main still makes contact with SETI every 24 hours (in the hopes that something starts up again ;) ) so I'm sure it still shows on my account. I haven't really looked for a while as I saw my others dropping off the page.

Credits will disappear from BOINCStats? Why would that be done?

Have a great day! :)

438 valid still, all other categories zero. Does anyone have any pending or inconclusive, or have we finished?

Hi Keith,

Long time no see. ;)

I just dropped 2 valids down to 123.

I know you were in the top 10, but weren't you also in the top 5? Now you're at #15 spot. I figured you would have stayed up there longer. Mr. 1337 has crawled to the top. :( Everyone else I know here has dropped. I haven't even checked to see what page I'm on let alone what number. Last I saw I was near the middle of page 7. Oh well. I'm just doing Rosetta now and getting near the 1/2 million mark. Oooh! lol ;)

Have a great day! :)

My last "validate error" will be cleared in around 3.5hrs. :-)

Other than that I still have 377 valid tasks that were validated a month or so ago waiting on unnescessary additional wingmen to either finish, timeout or to get through their glut of hoarded tasks. :-(

Cheers.

Hi Wiggo,

Yeah, me too. I still have 125 valid tasks.

I see that Mr. 1337 made it to the top on the leader boards. At this point in time, it MEANS NOTHING. lol ;) Doesn't even deserve bragging rights, not when one cheats to get there. ;)

Have a great day! :)

Hi Keith,

I just noticed that there could still be WU's In Progress one month before my personal 21st anniversary. I wonder if there will still be any at the end of August :)

Mine will be in 5 days. :) I hope you achieve yours.

Have a great day! :)
