Thanks to all for your kind help.

You are right; boincscr.exe just comes and goes. No harm, no foul.

Thanks also for the reminder about Sysinternals and Mark Russinovich. The man and his programs are marvels.

Now, for some reason, only two copies are being loaded. Here, hopefully, is a picture of the startup tab in Windows Task Manager:

I cannot make the image appear in the preview of this post, so here is a link to it. This URL works if I post it into the address bar of Chrome and IE: http://1drv.ms/1SPPYv7

If you don't use the screen saver, then set Windows up not to use the BOINC screen saver (select None from the drop-down list).

Thanks for your comment.

Windows does not use the screen saver. My only concern is the time it takes to boot.

On Windows 8.1, the startup group is visible in taskmgr. That display says BOINCMgr is loading 4 copies of the screensaver. Why is that? Are all 4 necessary? If not, and since I don't use the screensaver, how can I prevent them from being loaded?

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Stack-based Buffer Overrun with Lunatics_x41zc (Message 1597739)
Posted 6 Nov 2014 by Profile CElliott
Post:
In the last two days I have had 2 BugCheck 139 (KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE) with param 1 = 3 (A LIST_ENTRY has been corrupted...). In both cases Windbg supplied the following diagnostic information:
DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: LIST_ENTRY_CORRUPT
BUGCHECK_STR: 0x139
PROCESS_NAME: Lunatics_x41zc
CURRENT_IRQL: 2
ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000409 - The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application.

I just installed new apps with the 0.43a installer yesterday. Previously I was using the 0.43 installer apps.

ON THE OTHER HAND, this system has experienced a bugcheck error of many sorts nearly every day since I installed a Gigabyte replacement mobo received on RMA. The only difference between the last two bugcheck errors and the previous ones is that I investigated the last two with a memory dump and Windbg. Moreover, it is not unusual that Lunatics_x41zc would have the CPU as I run six at a time, all the time.

This problem occurred while I was running Windows 8, and appeared again just now about two minutes after the very first boot into Windows 8.1, which MS forced me to install.

In any case, does anyone think that Lunatics_x41zc could have a buffer overrun problem? If so, can I supply any more information?
9) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC may not be working fully with IPv6 addresses (Message 1572656)
Posted 16 Sep 2014 by Profile CElliott
Post:
Just in case, I put my link-local IPv6 address in remote_hosts.cfg. However, Boinc complains: "Can't resolve hostname in remote_hosts.cfg: fe80::852a:756b:462d:e79c". So I tried that address with boinccmd with the following command: boinccmd --host fe80:0:0:0:852a:756b:462d:e79c --get_host_info. The response was "can't connect to fe80". Boinccmd will work with 127.0.0.1 address, and both ping and tracert respond correctly using ip address fe80:0:0:0:852a:756b:462d:e79c. Note fe80::852a:756b:462d:e79c = fe80:0:0:0:852a:756b:462d:e79c, and both work with ping and tracert, but not with boinccmd.

I agree that the reason that this incident produced over 200 work units marked as abandoned was that I had to re-attach to the S@H project; I forgot about that.

However, that is not the fundamental problem. The question is, Why couldn't Boinc find the S@H account and statistics files? Naturally, I am not sure of the answer to that question, and it could be that they were merely corrupted. But I do know that I was able to make Boinc work after I took ownership (security-wise) of the whole BOINC-DATA directory tree, which is on G: instead of in the default location. When I installed a new Windows 8, the system knew nothing about the owner of that directory and its folders and files. In other words, it may be that the reason Boinc could not read the S@H account and statistics files was due to a security problem. When the Boinc installer sees that the BOINC-DATA directory tree already exists, why can't it make sure that all its folders and files are accessible, and at least tell the user if they are not?

My SSD crashed and had to be replaced. I installed a new copy of Windows 8 rather than use the backup in hopes of solving a hardware problem. After installing the video card drivers, various utilities, and Boinc, I ran Boinc. Here is the log:

Eventually, the server sent 2 new tasks:
05-May-2014 07:49:45 [SETI@home] Scheduler request completed: got 2 new tasks

When one was completed and returned, 115 were sent, and I was back in business:
05-May-2014 07:54:53 [SETI@home] Scheduler request completed: got 115 new tasks

The server made no attempt to resend lost work units. All 200 work units were declared abandoned and sent to the error bin.

I am not sure what caused the error. The computer booted once the morning of May 4, but then the system froze soon after and would not boot again. The SSD exhibited hundreds of bad blocks when tested with chkdsk on another system.

I suppose that it is possible that the client_state.xml file was corrupted when the system froze. However, I did nothing to clean it up; whatever repairs were done were done by Boinc itself.

I used a spare hard drive to make the system run on the morning of May 5. The results you see above. Later, the system on the hard disk was transferred to an new SSD.

I have two GTX 670s and two 760s on one mobo (Computer ID 7179664). All GPUs have 2048 MB of memory. As the load on the 4 GPUs was about 80% with 2 WUs per GPU, I changed <count>0.5</count> to <count>0.33333333</count> for 3 WUs per GPU.
I am only seeing 0.6 WU per hour more with 3 WUs per GPU than my other computer, which has lower quality GPUs and only 2 WUs per GPU. Part of the problem is that with 3 WUs per GPU, the system has trouble starting a new WU on a GPU when a WU finishes. Watching Task Manager, what happens when a new WUs is started is that the RAM assigned to the process stays at 2447K for many seconds, then increases to 19,xxxK for many more seconds, then finally goes to 70-94,xxxK at which time the process is fully runnning. Watching Efmer's BoincTasks at the same time, the new WU task is taking 1.5 to 6 minutes to start. All during this time it is using no measureable CPU time, but is being assigned GPU time, and progress increases. When the WU finally "catches," i.e., memory use is at its final value (70-94,xxxK), progress goes back to zero, elapsed time is 1 - 6 minutes, and CPU time is a few seconds. With 3 WUs per GPU, GPU load is a solid 99%. Where do you think the problem lies in starting a new WU when running 3 WUs per GPU?

10 + 10 = 20 days. Bear in mind that this is the S@H Beta site.

The CPU and GPU are so fundamentally different, there is no hope of making one DCF work for both.

On Christmas day, one of my computers was processing 8 vlar WUs downloaded from the beta site, which had all started at the same time because of preemption. Due to the long term succession of GPU WUs processed, the DCF declined to about 0.8, whereas normally it is higher than 1.20 when processing vlar WUs. Consequently Boinc downloaded 318 CPU WUs in about 2 hours, all of which were due yesterday (1/8/12) between 2:30 and 6:30 PM. (See the digest of stdoutdae.txt below.) Yesterday morning at 6:00 AM there were still 216 of these WUs to process. 130 of these could not be processed by the due date and were declared to be errors, thus increasing pending credit and annoying everyone in general.

This might not have happened if we had a separate DCF for GPU WUs.

I don't use 6.12 because I hate the extra steps one has to go thru to see the messages. I don't see any reason for the change, unless it is impossible to have more than 6 tabs across the top.

On the one machine I have that runs 6.12, there is nothing in stderrdae.txt since 2007, so perhaps the problem is fixed in 6.12.

Thank you for replying. It crashed again last night. The Boinc tray icon was displaying connecion error when I came down to work this morning. Here is when my Java program read the client_state.xml file on computer "Nat:"

1/6/2012 3:09:42 AM Start processing Nat
1/6/2012 3:09:44 AM Start processing Phillip

The dump begins at "Dump Timestamp : 01/06/12 03:10:15." That does not prove that my program that reads the state file is interferring with Boinc.exe, but they are too close together not to be gravely suspicious. I put the entire crash dump on http://www.pastebin.com/. My user name is CELLiott and the Paste Bin is named BoincCrashDump. I can access it; please tell me if you cannot.

BTW, the client_state.xml file is only 3,666,837 bytes long now. The file length may have nothing to do with the error.

I found stderrdae.txt; it is fairly large. In every case, it was trying to write the state file when it failed.

There is no "Exit." Boinc.exe exits, BoincMgr cannot connect to it, so the latter posts a tray ballon saying connection error, incorrect password, or similar. But the password is already there and correct, which can be demonstrated by going into BoincMgr.exe and clicking on Advanced/Select Computer and entering the computer name; the password appears as if by magic.

I think the problem might be a timing issue caused by the following: The Beta site was not accepting requests or downloading WUs over the entire weekend of the New Year and had been like that since the Tuesday outage. When it suddenly came on about noon EST on 01/02/12, I returned about 3,000 WUs in a few minutes. That implies that the client_state.xml files were huge because of all those voluminous <stderr_txt> sections. Boinc.exe had a problem reading or writing that long file and quit. In fact, I might have caused the problem: A program of mine looks for a change in size of the job_log_XYZ.txt file; when it sees that it reads the client_state.xml file over the network to see what happened, and puts started and finished results in a database. Normally, that is not a problem, but with a very long (> 50 MB) client_state.xml file, my program might just be locking it out long enough for Boinc.exe to have trouble writing to it, so Boinc.exe quits. I write this, not because confession is good for the soul, but because I only see this problem occasionally, but then it happens several times a week. Perhaps it only happens when I have a large number of WUs in inventory and there is an outage.

It would help if Boinc.exe and BoincMgr.exe wrote messages to the System Event Log when they encounter a problem, or a significant event. This is what NTPD.exe does, and it too runs on both Windows and Linux. NTP.ORG has developed their own API for this (complete with levels of importance so one can specify the logging detail), and then channel the message to the correct logging api depending on what O/S they are running on.
