Another way is through portion control. Just dividing a mega bag of say chicken nuggets into smaller ziplock bags is a viable alternative. It is much easier for me to just grab a snack bag size than to reach for the big bag and of completely fill the plate. Same goes for Totino Pizza rolls.

Both chicken nuggets and pizza rolls are high in carbs due to the breading. But of course everyone knows about portion control.

I've ordered some groceries. My order is filled with "snacks" and very little actual food, as in meals. LOL! I've got nuts, seeds, cheese, celery, and more. I'm also going to start making my breakfast smoothies again. The ingredients are typical, I think: plain yogurt; a splash of fruit juice; a handful of frozen fruits; a banana; and some vegan, fruit-flavored protein powder.

My plan is to eliminate as much sugar as possible while still eating and snacking, which will really be a struggle. I am one of those who is addicted to sugar.

Wish me luck.

P.S. I should have done this a long time ago.

Don't smoothies just turn fruit into sugar, defeating the original aim of eliminating sugar.

edit] British Heart Foundation (BHF) - 5 reasons why smoothies are not a shortcut to a healthy diet

No. Juice is when you take something and squeeze all the liquid out of it, throwing the remainder away. I don't do that, except for the already-squeezed orange juice, and I buy OJ with lots of pulp. What I do is take whole fruit and put it in the blender, consuming the whole thing. It's similar to swallowing a whole strawberry and letting your body break it down. You still get the "pulp" of the fruit.

IMHO.

(And I'll believe this until I die.)

No, by using a blender you have broken down the fruit into free sugars.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/are-smoothies-good-you
What’s the problem with smoothies?

There are a number of benefits from consuming smoothies, they increase fibre intake, contribute towards our 5 a day, boost our vitamin C levels and may help with conditions like high blood pressure.

However, when we blend or juice fruit, we’re breaking down the plant cell walls and exposing the natural sugars within. This effectively turns the sugars into ‘free sugars’, the type we are advised to cut back on.
Free sugars may lead to dental decay, provide excess calories and cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. For these reasons it’s best to enjoy your smoothie with other food, ideally at mealtimes, and to limit the number of glasses you consume.

edit] another article suggests the maximum size of a smoothie you shoulkd consume is about half a glass (4 oz or 114ml)

I should be ashamed to say that a recent glucose test put my glucose level at over 500.

I'm getting serious. No more sweets. Well, a very minimum of sweets. For example, I bought some chocolate-covered frozen banana slices. Bananas, good. Chocolate, not so good. But I'm trying to wean myself off of sugar, not quit cold-turkey.

The most recent glucose test (last evening) was just over 200. Much better, and headed in the right directon.

Someone tell me: at what point do the doctors decide you need to start injecting insulin?

You maybe there, depending. Get to your internist, first available appointment, to tell him the numbers; he'll order an A1C test to see how bad it really is. (One or two tests don't tell the whole story.)
Make that appointment TODAY. Please.
He'll likely put you on oral meds and if they work no injection. You are going to be pricking your finger 4 times a day until you are under control.
He'll also be making appointments for you with a dietitian and likely an endocrinologist.
You are going to hear some very scary things from your doctors. Pay attention. Draw from it for strength to resist sweet. <ed>Umami is a great substitute.

The bad part is getting under control and hopefully losing some weight. I'm not going to lie, it will be a few months and tough. Once there life isn't over, I promise it does get better, even normal if you do as your are advised.

Good luck.

I don’t know when exactly when shots start. My stepmom was in the hospital one time and I was visiting. The doctor was micromanaging her blood sugar with insulation. I don’t really know where they draw the line exactly. If you where his patient. You would has had a small dose to knock down the 500 number.
Bananas aren’t the best either. The greener they are the less sugar they give up. Riper bananas give up sugars easier. Dark chocolate is better for having less sugar.

Let me add, I'm sure you are going to get a full blood workup. There are a lot of things that go with type 2. Your kidney function needs to be measured, blood pressure, cholesterol and all the usual blood and organ function tests.

Depending on results, you may end up with a urologist, nephrologist, cardiologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist, retina specialist.

High glucose levels wreak havoc on almost all the internal organs, and the effects build with time.

Just curious. What is the time interval between last bite of food and blood testing? That has a lot of difference on glucose numbers. Then blood pressure is something you need to be aware of. My mother was a Type 1 diabetic so I know some of the problems associated with diabetes.
I know it sounds scary. In time if you are diagnosed as diabetes. It will become less of a omg type thing and become more normal to think about.

Opportunely, we just now have:

In today’s short episode of ZOE Science & Nutrition, Jonathan and Sarah ask: What is eating rate and does it have any impact on our health?
wrote:
... can something as simple as changing the speed with which we eat really be an effective tool for weight loss and sustaining a healthy body?...

Evey piece of the puzzle helps for good health...

Good luck!

Enjoy!

Food for thought. Do you want to start a food diary?
I need one for myself too. Just to keep a idea of what is going in me. Helps with deciding if chewing on something is a good thing. I need to pick up the ink pen and start writing mine again. It helps just to write the basics down. Like the time and what it was you ate. Example: breakfast, lunch, snacks, and if you (me) got stupid and went back for thirds. Mainly I just use it for time remembering.

I tried that. And tried it again. I'm not good at all at keeping up with that sort of thing. I agree, though, that it is an excellent idea.

Here the taste is excellent, the best I've ever tasted in almost 63yrs, but it's exclusive to where I live at.

It could use extra filtering or a flavor powder to improve actual taste quality.

Why chronic stress drives our brains to crave comfort food
New research out of Australia, however, may have you second guessing your next trip to the vending machine. Scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research have found that when people combine stress with calorie-dense “comfort food,” it can actually spark changes in the brain that boosts cravings for sweets and other junk foods.

Another hungry effect is the post-addictive crash you suffer after snacking on whatever super-formulated junk nibbles. Amazing how you do feel so very hungry again a short while later!

Or...
