I was hoping to get into the brewroom this morning, but I just can't seem to get warm enough as yet to move freely enough to do the job (though it's still early and I'm still hopeful). How many bushels in a tonne? |

How many bushels in a tonne?I wouldn't even try to guess that 1 Gary as a bushel varies greatly depending on what is being measured so I regard that measure as totally useless in these modern times. ;-) We're now up to 8C (feels like 3C) outside while it's between 21-28C depending on how close 1 is to the wood heater and I'm just waiting for my 1st lot of 12L of water to boil so that I can get started sterilising bottles. Cheers. |

A Tun (or Old English Tonne) is four hogsheads, or 14 rundlets...... In other words a big barrel. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

We made it to 10C (felt like 4C) here today, but it's starting to slide back now. Cheers. |

Meanwhile we've enjoyed an early morning chilly damp start to the day... ... And as we already begin to lose the sunshine, it is rather 'damp' now! Is this the first day of a portent of Autumn? Winning on a very chilly and very frosty Thorsday morning where the temp is -5C (feels like -8C) with 13C being expected. Cheers. |

Portentous monsoons??...Those are expected a month early here again this year. :-( Well we've reached 13C (feels like 8C) here and it'll be all downhill from here now. Anyhow I better finish this beer to give Dog an early feed and put her on her chain as my load of firewood is due after the kids get picked up from school. ;-) Cheers. |

I think that that load of firewood that got dropped off here is closer to 1.2-1.3 tonnes after splitting a barrow load of it. They were very big rounds this time giving me more incentive to get a project started building a round splitter that doesn't require so much effort to reduce down to a reasonable size. I'll have this beer and then I'll see how much lipstick I can wipe off my Houlihan. My mate loved the idea so he now calls his "Margaret" as the colour of them is called "Hot Lips". Cheers. |

Well I did make a small dent in that lot splitting a very full wheelbarrow load before turning most of that into kindling downstairs by the fire. Anyway the mercury reached did reach 13C (felt like 8C) here today while it's now down to 1C (feels like -1C) with it expected to drop to -3C in the morning. Cheers. |

Took a few days and went to visit the Redwood in Humbolt and Mendocino. It's so refreshing to walk around and inside the giants. |

Phew!... Who could imagine the fun in replacing a £10 part in amongst a few bolted together bits of old cast iron?... TWO DAYS later and... OK... I always was a bit bemused as to why part of the contraption is obviously off centre... Removal of the worn out part involved some awkward disassembly whereupon the failed part fell out of a bent bracket by the beautiful wonder of gravity. Then to get the new part in and... Can't see to maneuver, can't easily get any tools in there either... Can't even get your hand in there unless you have a trusted accomplice to hold you upside down by your ankles... OK... So bring the mountain to Mohammad and remove the bracket... It's only held on with one bolt and a single nut from another part... Easy?... Again, no access to the nut and bolt unless... You bend the bracket! (Or you spend another two days completely disassembling lots of other nicely corroded parts... And the reason for the off-centre part?... That gives exactly the minimum clearance needed to swing a spanner a meager 1/12th of a turn at a time! What sort of design for maintenance is that (not!!)?... Regardless, all is running smooth again and sounds a lot better for having had a good clean out of the insides. Very glad that is not my proper day job! ... And at least that has avoided some expensively unnecessary scrap. Time for a double brew!!
