Message 2135056 - Posted: 22 Apr 2024, 0:35:14 UTC - in response to Message 2135047.

Many suns & moons ago had a Dell PC that I thought was completely dead, no beeps no lights, etc. Nothing would get it to beep or light up. Went and bought a new one to replace it next day.

I had put the dead one off to the side for probably 6 months or so and one day decided to try to figure out what went wrong, plugged it in, connected keyboard, etc.

Pressed power button, it beeped and booted into CMOS setup mode with factory settings. Went through all menus and found a screen that showed the CMOS battery voltage was less than 1 volt. Power down, replaced the CR2032 battery and rebooted again it went into Windows (95).

Power down/reboot to the CMOS menu so could change date/time and a few other things. Worked for another 6 years as a backup/storage until HDD gave up.

YouTube just served up some comedy gold. It was a australian Bushbarbie talking about “dingers”. She never said anything but in innuendo. All the while dressed like a tourist wearing Kacky’s in the outback. LMAO.

Interesting advertising with a jaunty angle.

*time to vent*

I have a smart phone, but i pretty much only use it as a phone (although the timer function is useful). I don't email, i don't use maps, i don't browse the web, i don't play games. The only applications i've added to it that i use are for my Credit union, to check balances- i don't actually do any banking on it. I don't use it to pay bills, either online or at a checkout. And the BoM weather app (the default one, which i can't remove, just annoys me). And i only text if a have to.
Like said, it's phone, so i use it to talk to people.

I have mobile data disabled, as i'm on a pre-paid plan & mobile data chews through my credit like water going down the Amazon in flood, so the phone only connects for data transfer when i'm at home on my WiFi to my internet connection.

So even though i never make use of the browser on my phone, Google Play or Google store or Galaxy store or any of that stuff, WTF do they use over 750MB of data every single month????????

*end vent*

And i know i'm sounding like the tin foil hat mob, but i found it somewhat disconcerting that after i did some Google searches about my Galaxy S8+ phone, that i started getting Samsung ads on several web sites- ads for a brand that i have never received before.

There's a variety of reasons why it's still "using cellular data" even when you have that turned off & are connected to WiFi. I'm guessing your phone is most likely Android Based, not Apple.

Had it happen to me years ago and couldn't figure it out why...

First thing to do is Look in your Settings > Data usage and see which apps are using data & if it's WiFi or Cellular data or sometimes both.

The Linked article has some great tips on what to disable/turn off - especially theses two settings (exact name varies by phone mfgr and types).

*Mobile Data Always Active is on. (turn off/disable).
*Apps auto-update. (turn off/disable).

Why Is My phone Using Data Even With Mobile Data Turned Off?

It's not using Cellular data.
It's using 750MB of data via WiFi for applications i don't even use. Completely unused applications- yet they use 750MB of data- every month. There are plenty of other unused apps on the phone (none of which can be uninstalled, or if you do they re-install themselves), but at least they don't use 750MB of data while sitting there not being used.

And to add to my bellyache about smart phones- just got a new/2nd hand S21 5G. Now while people might complain about Windows & it's updates, at least if you have a really old installation of an unpatched OS, it will update to the most recent version of that OS. If you can, you can then update to the next OS, and it will be the most recent version of it.
So far i have done about 5 or 7 updates (i've lost count now) to bring this phone as up to date as it can be, 8GB & counting of data. But instead of a couple of OS version updates to the latest version, it's incremental update after update, then the next OS version & incremental update after update...
At least it is updateable, if it were an Apple product it would have been unsupported ages ago.

Sorry Grant. Don’t mean to step on your toes. My iOS phone has clocked up 48.1GB and more to come before the end of the month. It would have been higher if I had not turned off cellular data on most of my apps. I turn off Wi-Fi when I’m not using it plus Bluetooth. Stops them hunting for a connection signal to burn more data.
It is one of the reasons I have a unlimited data phone plan.

Someone has been calling me about twice a week and saying they're from Assurance Wireless while being Blocked, I just called 611 to get in touch with Assurance Wireless, the number is 1-213-443-6146 and is labeled Zoom, if you see a caller from this number block them, the only other alternative is to change my phone number, needless to say this 213 number is not Assurance Wireless at all.

But i suspect you're using that for video chat or maps or email or web browsing as well?
If not, holy hell!

I can understand an unused programme checking for updates. But i can't see that using 750MB of Data every single month, even if there are updates very single month.
If bandwidth were free, it wouldn't be such an issue, bit it isn't free and it's got to be paid for.
I'm prepared to pay a reasonable amount for what i use & how fast i get it, but having to pay for things i'm not actually using really sucks.

Mainly it is YouTube and a anime streaming subscription with a little PlutoTv. Then some web browsing including here.

That' d do it. Even low res & low quality video chews through way more bandwidth than most other uses.

I just pay for access here, less than 100 won't work for youtube or Disney+ and Hulu, Disney & Hulu cost me $9.99 a month, this month $54.99 for Spectrum cable internet, next month $69.99, but there is hope on the Frontier, since FTTP is coming to Yermo, Daggett, and Newberry Springs in Calif thanks to a $24 Mn grant.

That $69.99 gets one 300 and what they do offer that is slower is only good for email and web browsing as it's way too slow.

I’m doing all my stuff on a 1st generation SE iPhone. The great thing I like is the lightening to hdmi adapter. I can watch the iPhone screen at 1080p on my 50 inch tv or 130 inch video projector. I still have 15 more days to rack up more data.
