WaPo - Live updates: Oregon coronavirus infection becomes third case of unknown origin in U.S.

A northwest Oregon resident has tested positive for coronavirus with no known history of travel to countries severely affected by the outbreak and no known contact with infected individuals, state health officials said Friday.

The case, in Washington County, marks the third case of unknown origin in the United States and indicates that the virus is spreading. It is also the first coronavirus case in Oregon.

The patient, whose age and gender were not disclosed, is at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center in Hillsboro, officials said.

Oregon Health Authority Director Patrick Allen said the case is considered “presumptive” while the state awaits confirmation of test results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The patient was recently at a local elementary school, Allen said.

Meaning that we don't really have enough knowledge to know if the Coronavirus is "just" another flu like virus with many similar flu like deaths to those who are old and/or have other serious medical conditions.

With the hindsight of the Spanish flu hundred years ago it's no wonder that health organisations are on their toes. The media of course report that. Then people reading that and get worried. Could it happen again? Of course it can. But nobody knows for sure. So for now it's about isolating the virus and hope for the best.

So far almost all of the cases have been in the better off class of people, those that can afford to fly around and can self isolate if needed.

It looks like in Italy it has broken into the general populace in a small area.

If/when this happens in other area's then the number of cases could rise dramatically.

In the sort of work I do (lorry driver) I meet other drivers on a daily basis that are based throughout the UK, and these drivers are in direct contact with local delivery drivers in there own area's, we handle hundreds of thousands of mail and parcels daily, it would not take much for an infection to spread very fast:-(

Washington state health officials are investigating a possible outbreak of coronavirus at a long-term nursing facility in which two people tested positive for the disease.
In all, eight people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the state, including a man whose death was reported Saturday, making him the first coronavirus fatality in the United States.
Two new cases were confirmed by Seattle and King County Public Health officials on Sunday. They are both males in their 60s with underlying health conditions. One is "in critical but stable condition" at Valley Medical Center in Renton. The other is in critical condition at Virginia Mason Medical Center, a news release said.

The first case of coronavirus in New York City was confirmed on Sunday to be a woman in her late 30s who recently traveled to Iran, a state official said.

Governor Cuomo released a statement on Sunday night announcing the first case in the state. A source told The Post that the woman lives in Manhattan.

“The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her home,” Cuomo said in the statement.
