It is freeware. And MUCH better than Notepad. It can be used in Windows, MacOS and Linux cross-platform. It handles all the varieties of LF, CR an LFCR that each OS uses. It is great for simple coding. I used it to find that .XML error of yours by line number and column number that Chrome reported. Hi Stephen, Glad to see that you got your app_info.xml straightened out and running. How do you like your new slim version? Now for your next daunting task, cleaning out all of the unused stuff from your seti@home directory. :-) I think the only way to get Notepadd++ to work on Linux is to install Wine. I use Gedit, which is very similar to Notepad++. There are other editors like Vim or Kate or Geany, that are also very good. Just comes down to personal preference and what you actually need it to do. Keep learning, it's fun. Bruce |

Hi Stephen, . . I feel a lot more comfortable with app_info.xml now that I have added all the lines to space things out, it makes much more sense this way. And I have a lot more understanding of how things work (though still not a lot). . . Not knowing what WINE is I will wait until I decide Notepad++ is worth the effort by running it under Windows for a while. And the app_info is now less than 5K where it was nearly 40K before. . . And yes, it was fun learning how to get it all working. but after each attempt to get it right moving the mouse to the BOINC icon felt like sticking my hand in a mincer, I was waiting for the pain .... . . The good thing is I have already recovered nearly half the ghosts it created. Stephen :) |

Very typical way of handling applications available on multiple platforms. Are you sure Keith. I just tried your link and downloaded a few and they were all Windows based, not Linux which I am running. Can you try it and provide an actual link for the Linux version, please. I like Notepad++. Thanks. Bruce |

OK, I misspoke I see. There is not a Linux version. I thought since there was source code on Github that you could compile it under Linux. Looks like it is Windows only. For another Linux editor, then the previously mentioned Atom editor would be the logical choice. installing-atom-text-editor-ubuntu-now-super-easy install-atom-text-editor-ubuntu-16-04 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Accessing the Notepad++ home page on a Linux machine, then following the link to the download page does not offer a Linux version, only a selection of Windows versions. Checking on the home page there is a message: Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures higher execution speed and smaller program size.No mention anywhere of a Linux API, or anything to do with Linux - which is a great shame because it is a great tool and beats the MS Notepad into the corner without too much sweat.
