In addition to cryptojacking and tax evasion, some other uses of cryptocurrency include narcotics, child pornography, human trafficking, illegal weapons, money laundering, blackmail, ransomware...

... basically everything that an anonymous, digital, supposedly untraceable currency was predicted to be used for.

It's weird to mix religion and economics...
Chechen Leader Kadyrov Turns to Religion to Regulate Bitcoin
https://themoscowtimes.com/news/chechen-leader-kadyrov-turns-to-religion-to-regulate-bitcoin-60520
“The council of [religious scholars] agreed that we should learn if we can buy, sell, make settlements with this money,” Kadyrov wrote on Telegram Wednesday.
“If this is possible, we will come to the conclusion that cryptocurrency is halal,” he added.

Bitcoin Under Pressure as U.S., Japan Revive Regulation Concern.

Bitcoin slumped for a third day amid fears of a regulatory clampdown on cryptocurrency exchanges in Japan and the U.S., the world’s most active markets for digital assets.

The biggest virtual currency declined more than 3 percent in early Asia trading, extending its slump below $10,000, after Japan’s Financial Services Agency ordered two exchanges to halt operations for a month and penalized four others. The FSA’s announcement came just hours after a warning from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that many online trading platforms should register with the agency.
Cheers.

The Colorado Dept of Transportation office computer network was infected with a very tenacious Trojan that hides and mutates. It took down the finance and HR department computers state wide.

The hacker demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin to stop the attack ...........THIS is the reason Bitcoin and crypto currencies in general are 'useful'.......for transactions involving blackmail, human trafficking, drug sales, illegal firearms and most other criminal endeavors.

I don't think the term 'Blood Money' has a better example...........

Eye and I agree. If your computer calculates a blockchain for an illegal transaction, you are guilty of laundering that money. That's all it takes.

Same here, retired blue collar in '06, purchased in '92 and mine has appreciated 310%. I too cashed out some profit and have pushed in another direction.

Agreed but ....310% sounds good but when worked out over approx 25 years you bought in 92 ..you still holding or sell and when did you sell !!!

works out a lot less than 310% per year so ...yes you have done well .. .. however realty you didn't make much above inflation if over 24 years ....

stock markets be they normal or Bit Coin or Forex , Futures you will earn much much more than what you have over the same period of time so long as you are not greedy .

Ergo : peak of market $19,000 drops to $9000 less call it expenses drops to $4800 ......End of Jan .......March market steady and not doing much back up to $8000+

So be smart and don't be greedy nibble , nibble ,nibble NOT all in or bust and you can do very nicely . 2% + 2% +2% +2% +2% blah blah ends up % well that depends on you !

And you can use land in the same way just more complicated good luck ..

Umm Calculataes a Block Chain .............? Do you mean if you write a smart contract for illegal uses ? Writing a app that encrypts a network is not the same as Crypto Block chains BLAME YOUR Navy for opening up Pandora's Box and then ask your self why did they do it .........

Blocks can be traced witch is a miss understanding by most .

Using someone else computer hardware without there approval is always illegal and encrypting that system and demanding a payment is only done by a complete iddot as by now everyone should know you don't pay and to backup your system for Hack just like the one your talking about .

2 Australian employees from Boom (weather dept) are under investigation for trying to use there network computers from mining Bitcoin ...Now if they did mine any all the Feds have to do is watch them and track them and if they try to sell said coins well there going to lose the lot . One thing to extort the money but it's whole different ball game once you have been found out and then try and spend it

Well in the not to distant future some country's will not have to worry about power for mining as they will use that big red thinggy up in the sky along with the thing that makes a noise if it blows to much to generate the power they will need .

Alas some country's won't progress along this path or if they do they won't see the low prices for there power as some only do things for greed

Sorry I only paid for 12 years, I refinanced down to 4 1/8% after five years. I cashed it out in 7 more years with over payments. Having tracked the principle/interest/inflation I paid over that time, I know I am way head. I own a prime location. It is called 'Real Estate' for a reason.

You rent, mortgaged or own?

What the heck are you talking about in this?

My post (that you replied to)http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=82368&postid=1918983#1918983 has nothing to do with electricity... Let me quote it...

Here, let me quote from the bbc article:

"We'd like to use the latest GPUs [graphics processing units]... and we can't get 'em," said Dan Werthimer.

Demand for GPUs has soared recently thanks to crypto-currency mining.

"That's limiting our search for extra-terrestrials, to try to answer the question, 'Are we alone? Is there anybody out there?'," Dr Werthimer told the BBC.

Recognize the name I've underlined? You should...

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_about.php

What these articles I linked are about is that it became difficult to get GPU's due to all the extra demand caused by crypto-currency mining...

B.C. CEO charged with conspiring to sell unhackable phones to criminals

This is the paragraph that caught my notice:

Documents obtained by Postmedia show Ramos used shell companies and crypto currencies to allegedly launder “tens of millions” of dollars of his illicit profits. The latest indictment alleges Phantom Secure generated approximately $80 million in annual revenue since 2008.

It Has Begun! Venezuela Launches National Oil-Backed Cryptocurrency.
https://sputniknews.com/business/201801061060550736-venezuela-maduropetro-launch-emission/
Venezuela is issuing $5.9 billion in petro, its state cryptocurrency, in the hopes that it will drive the country out of economic downfall amid US sanctions. The petro is backed by the country's oil, diamond and gold reserves.

Well, it was pretty obvious from the get-go (this story even comes from Sputnik News) but confirmed:

Russia Secretly Helped Venezuela Launch a Cryptocurrency to Evade U.S. Sanctions

President Donald Trump may not have realized on Monday that his executive order would step on Russia’s toes. Its official target was Venezuela, specifically the country’s plan to create the world’s first state-backed cryptocurrency, the petro, which went on sale Tuesday.

But behind the scenes, the petro was in fact a collaboration—a half-hidden joint venture between Venezuelan and Russian officials and businessmen, whose aim was to erode the power of U.S. sanctions, sources familiar with the effort told TIME.

Trump’s executive order did not mention the petro’s Russian backers, whose role has not previously been reported. Citing economic sanctions that the U.S. imposed against Venezuela in August, the order simply made clear that anyone who buys or uses the new cryptocurrency would be in breach of those sanctions, as would anyone under U.S. jurisdiction who helps Venezuela develop the petro. “Any conspiracy formed to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited,” the document states.

That has nothing to do with either child pornography, or Bitcoin, at all. The site indicated that the videos are migrating to is the largest (adult) pornography site on the internet and stays that way by being strictly legal as far as age and content goes at least, and no cryptocurrency is mentioned.
