Hello,

Christmas is coming, time to ask Santa for a new graphic card.
GTX 1070 seems to be the best choice in performance/price.

There are so many different cards that it's hard to choose !
Any advice ?

Does a card with OC is really worth ? Will it make seti run faster ?
If so, how much ? (few percent ?) .. need to save electricity bill (and the planet also ;)
Increasing power from 150 to 180 Watts will cost 30 euros/year and my PSU needs
to cope with extra power

What about 'coil whine' ?
I like the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X but it seems to get loud 'coil whine' in game...
Anyone have experienced such noise when running seti ?

I have two GTX 950 running and sometimes I can hear 'coil whine' from time to time....

Go for a base clock speed, with "stock" cooling as these are more often than not the best engineered so most reliable. What you are describing as "coil whine" is probably the cooling fans, on cards with multiple fans, or multiple cards you can get some strange beating noises between the fans. If it really is "coil whine" then I wouldn't expect those cards to have a very long life expectancy.
Gaming doesn't stress cards as much as computing, so expect the fans to have to work harder, and so the noise levels to increase :-(
As an aside - Noise doesn't worry me as the computers are in a different room so I can run fans at 100% all day - the only down side to that is I tend to destroy fans due to their c**p bearings.

Overclocking will increase the power draw for a card, and thus your power bill - the power draw is not always linear with increased clock speed, it can be very significantly above that.

This is what I ended up buying ASUS GTX 1070

EDIT: Ohh yea, Don't forget to read the fine print ...

Note:
. To have the best cooling performance, ASUS DUAL-GTX1070-8G extends the fansink to 2.1 slots. Please double check you Chassis and Motherboard dimension prior to purchase to make sure it fits in your system!

That's on the ASUS page, NOT where I bought it from.

EDIT2: Mine seemed fine for 15 minutes of getting the fan spinning real good, when it contacted my 750Ti, gave a good growl, then started spitting fan blades out .... GRRRRRR

...A "fine" example of non-standard cooling arrangements :-(

(I've noticed a few other manufacturers increasing the width of some of their products of late - a grade one pain in the furniture polisher)

I prefer hybrids myself. Just completed conversion of my 4 1070s to hybrids but you can avoid that hassle and just go with

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487264

Nice about this is it's based on the FTW model, it's slightly smaller in height than the FTW so you don't have to worry about impacting the GPU below it as exampled shown by Brent in post above :(

When I have standard 1070 FTW they were impacting with the GPU below it so I was forced to place spacers between the GPUs.

Now with the hybrids, they don't need any spacers, they run much cooler (ie 32C) under full load

my 2 cents...

Finally, I've bought a MSI GeForce GTX 1070 ARMOR 8G OC : 420 euros.
Twice as fast as my previous GTX 950....67 degrees...use around 100 Watts.
The card is quite large (27 cm) but fans are running at 60%

blc units takes 5 min 30 to complete (was 11-12 min with GTX 950 and take more than 1 hour on CPU).

I recommend this card !

From what I've seen (Don't own one) Seems like a great choice. GG
