@petri. Saw that. Try using too many registers, or too few, and see what happens ;D

Oh yeah. And cut and paste with select all...

Hi,
To mess around the computer for a short period of time you can run 'sudo bash' in a terminal window. That will give you permission to do whatever you like, but you can destroy so much and at the same time with an inadvert rm -r * at the / andOr give any hostile app you accidentally run the superuser powers too. *Try this at home before trying it at work*
a) top
b) ps -A|more
those will tell you what is running at the moment.
b) can be also : ps -A|grep searchword
Petri

. . Thank you Petri that was very helpful, though getting OUT of top was a little awkward. But now I need to know how to completely REMOVE both BOINC installs so I can start from scratch. Clearly I am going to have no end of troubles if I try to use anonymous platform with the current version where it is.

Stephen, maybe you should open your thread about your adventures into Linux land. ;-)

Nah, that's his thing. Let him do what he does. It might be fun.

Also on Ubuntu I use something called 'Activity Monitor' that seemed to have already been there. Is there a need for tutorials/guides/videos on this kindof stuff ? I could think about doing something like that...

. . I am sure that for long time Windows users venturing into the world of Linux that would be most appreciated.

Interesting. I will think about that as I try to find ways to present myself as less awkward, old and fat.

I think it's a bit late for that.
And until/unless Tbar comes up with a revised version I think this thread had pretty much come to an end.

If it works out, then a new thread with the step by step guide without all the miss-steps would be helpful.

I'd only add: sometime the 'missteps' are important, for development purposes at the very least. I'd rather see this particular thread go on, Then those of us that advance beyond it can ridicule it from the outsider (which is potential fun)

If you have the Repository version installed it should be here, /var/lib/boinc/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu.
Yes, deep in the bowels of the Computer requiring Root privileges. But, you don't need to be Root to just look at it.

. . OK, in /var/lib there is no boinc folder only a boinc-client folder and it will not let me look at anything below that. OK, so maybe the best thing is to uninstall/remove BOINC completely and start again. So my next question is how do I remove all traces of the current BOINC?
I think about Four years ago, the last time I used the Repository version, I ended up entering boinc in the Package Manager, and uninstalled everything boinc that was installed. Then I opened a terminal window and entered gksu nautilus, which will open a file browser as Root. Whatever you do in that Window will be as Root. Then I searched the Computer for boinc and vaporized anything containing boinc. Careful to leave the items in your home folder alone though, those files in your folder you want to keep. I really can't remember how that turned out though...it was years ago ;-)

As I recall nautilus ended up being similar to Windows 3.11, so pretty crap. Not much more than that do I remember, other than learning to use what works for you at the time. Probably a valuable skill in retrospect

It still gets the job done though. I use it whenever I need to do something as Root, such as creating OpenCL links, editing GPU_manager and xorg.conf files, etc, etc. I'm inclined to do things visually rather than experience the inevitable typo. Typos as Root can leave a mark.

BTW, what happened to Rob? I thought he was going to host the CUDA libraries....

. . Yes, an egg to chicken flow chart of migrating to Linux and then running BOINC with CUDA80 Special Sauce. That would be a very useful post and would deserve a sticky thread marker.

. . What a very handy command. But whenever I want to edit anything I will need to put that command in first is that correct?

. . I have now put all the libraries and executables into that folder. I am going to reboot and try it again, it'll either work or crash and burn :(

. . Thanks

. . OK. so I am basically about to stick my head in the lion's mouth. How exciting. Nice to know that package manager will also uninstall software too. If this first attempt I am trying doesn't work then I will follow your method.

You won't need to run that command every time you edit a file, but it is worth doing it after you copy files from some other place to the BOINC working directory as sometimes the permissions don't get the directory permissions, but carry their "old" permissions along for the ride. I've noticed this most when using a USB stick to do the transfer....

. . I need to start a notebook and write down all these commands and syntaxes and stuff because I have a goldfish memory. But I think this time I really, really stuffed up.

. . IT'S WORKING!!

. . But of course Murphy is still looking over my shoulder, he is never far away, each work request is now being greeted by stoney silence :(
