cravings

We have taken all of the high fat snack foods out of the house.
After supper there are no ice-cream, high fat, high sugar, or high
carb' snacks to be had here. If carrots, or greens won't do it
then it is a good time to hit the sack as there is nothing to be had.

edit:
It is not that we are brave, in fact because I am so weak that we have to do these hard things. I would rather be hungry at night than dead at any time!

My cravings are usually for something sweet. Problem is, if I do have something
sweet that I'm allowed to eat, like the diabetes snack bars sold in the stores,
they come in a box of four or more, and I'm likely to eat them all, or at least
two of them instead of only one.

I've found that "Cuties," a brand of tangelos, are quite sweet and I like them
a lot. I'll buy those whenever I go grocery shopping. I also have some of the
individual serving fruit cups.

I have taught myself not to be satisfied unless my belly is real full. This is
something I need to unlearn. And, frankly, I'm no longer sure if what I think
is hunger actually is hunger, or whether it's boredom or something else. I
recently read something that said, if you think you're feeling hungry, do
something to take your mind off of it for 20 minutes. If you're still hungry
after that, then eat a snack.

My cravings are usually for something sweet.

I know, but if the belly is full of roughage then it is full period.

I highly recommend at these "snack" times, (when feeling hungry), is to first drink a large glass of water. (I prefer ice water.) Typically; the "hungry" feeling is actually a feeling of thirst. After drinking a large glass of water you will be amazed to find that you're NOT hungry anymore.

If, however, after 15 min. from drinking that water that you are still hungry, try getting some more veggies into your system. Remember, 12-15 NC of veggies a day are key to good health. :-)

...And, technically those tangelos are NOT on Plan. Oranges, and other orange like fruits have too much sugar in them - so, REALLY high in carbs! Not judging, just educating.

Once at Maintenance on the Atkins Plan, (have reached goal weight), then more fruits are able to be added back into the diet... However; in the first three Phases of Atkins, no oranges, orange like fruits, juices, nor watermelon are allowed. In Phase 2, one may add back in raspberries and blackberries, and some strawberries.

Again, read, read, and read some more on low carb plan diets. Go to Atkins.com, also get The New Atkins Made Easy book. These will help you make better food choices. :-)

Okay, so we're sort of talking apples and oranges here. (Heehee)

Atkins vs. diabetes. Not exactly the same, but close. I will bring it up
with the dietician at the next class.

[Re-posting for Links...]

Someone told me that he started a discussion on one of the diabetes sites. I'm
pretty sure I didn't dream it!

Anyone?

I don't know who said it; but, as far as Atkins goes, (with support for diabetes), this Link has further Atkins info. for Diabetics.

How Atkins can stop or reverse diabetes.

As Gary has said, (and I support fully), run all this past your physician in charge of your diabetic condition. Work closely with him/her.

There are MANY misconceptions about Atkins. Read The New Atkins Made Easy book, and read everything you can from Atkins.com

This Link also has information on how to start Atkins properly. How Atkins Works - Atkins 20 Plan.

Don't just take my word for it; read, and read, and read some more. As Gary said, portion control is key; but, ALSO, fresh whole foods are key. Even the support staff on the Atkins Website state that you should NOT rely solely on the Atkins frozen meals.

I hope all this helps, and doesn't frustrate you.

Low carb, High fat, and Moderate protein intake as Atkins promotes works for EVERYONE, not just Diabetics.

Keeping on Atkins is a Lifestyle change. This is NOT a quickie diet to lose weight and then gain it back again. I'm making this my Life Plan.

As of yesterday, I'm down almost 50 lbs since starting in October.

Good luck, and God bless. :-)

TL

Check the Links I provided earlier about Atkins being able to REVERSE Type 2 Diabetes, and the Atkins 20 Plan. :-)

Light jelly makes a tasty, sweet and satisfying snack. 1 sachet makes 500 ml bowl of jelly and if I eat it all it's only 68 calories. If you can find one similar to the Aussie stuff it could be good for you. http://www.aeroplanejelly.com.au/our-products/jelly-lite/lite-raspberry

We call that either Jell-O (brand name) or gelatin. We have sugar-free versions
here. Don't you?

When I was a child we used to pour a little milk over our Jell-O.

The Atkins discussion is sort of moot now. I've ordered a month's worth of
Nutri-System (Diabetic), which is still pretty high in carbs, but still keeps
me below my daily goal of 180 grams.

I have to continue for two months. If I cancel during the first month I will be
charged $99 to cover the discount I was given for being "Auto Delivery." Once
I have paid for my second month's worth of food, I can cancel with no penalty.

Those first two months are $310 each. With that I get 28 breakfasts, lunches,
dinners, and snacks. I'll also get some free "shakes" with my first order.

I've done a Nutri-System diet before and found the food acceptable. And I was
successful at losing weight. Of course, I gained it all back. That can't happen
this time because I'll have to remain on a diabetes diet after I quit N-S.

I think the chili I frequently make is low carb enough for me to eat on this
diet, but I'll have to eat a little less. Same with the spaghetti sauce I make.
I'll have to either find a low carb pasta or eat it without pasta, as in
"spaghetti and meat balls," or something like that.

I did, but not closely enough, I guess.

Jelly is something we put on our toast or on a sandwich with peanut butter.

I see that the packages say "Low Sugar." Is there real sugar or just the
artificial sweeteners? Are you allowed to call artificial sweeteners "sugar"?
