It's to stop clocks from "bonging" every hour, so you can get some peace at odd times.

Don't ask me how it works, but it does. So does a large lump hammer! :) That has an advantage because it tends towards being more permanent.

so many old clocks had different sizes to wined the spring so this is a replacement for that lost key.
