It has become an enjoyable January tradition for me to review photos we took last year and then share a few of them with you. As always, the photos come along with snippets of wisdom from various members of the Korpela family. Angela advises that wherever you travel, you do your best to converse with the locals. Dain would like to remind you that it is impolite to look down upon others. (Unless of course they are mice and you are planning to eat them for dinner.) Stinky Lou suspects that thinking outside of the box may be over-rated... ...and Eva concurs. Spawnie suggests that if you are about to get upset about something, lie down and take a nap. The feeling will pass. Purvis reminds you to always be grateful to those who welcome you home... no matter what kind of a stink you've gotten yourself into this time! Eric says, "They're out there... keep crunching." Happy New Year, from our home to yours. |

You live in a zoo, have fun. Well... I'm pretty sure that the raccoons refer to Eric and to me as "the house monkeys"? Anyway, if you feed them, they will come. |

Today, being Burn's Night, the end of the long winter eating festival I post you all a picture of the dish that will be consumed in many a household tonight: On completion of the meal a toast is made "Tae mussin' freends", a glass of whisky is raised and drained. Oh my!!! Rob, is that haggis... I'm going to guess with mashed potatoes on the left and perhaps mashed turnips (or maybe mashed rutabagas?) on the right? And I'm also going to guess that "Tae mussin'" means "to mutton"??? @Scott, I believe that you and Purvis have already had the pleasure of meeting. You have to admit that he is a handsome fellow. I don't believe that you stayed outside long enough last time to fully appreciate Purvis' full beauty!!! I'm glad that people are enjoying the pictures. I have enjoyed sharing them. In case anyone is curious, Dain is a red shouldered hawk. Red shouldered hawks are smaller raptors than the red tailed hawks who are also found in the San Francisco Bay Area. Red shouldered hawks may be smaller than red tailed hawks, but I can assure you that these small hawks are every bit as loud as their cousins! All of their hawk screeching must be either territorial or mating related, because I can think of absolutely no reason why Dain would want to make all that ruckus while hunting. I mean seriously, Dain!!! What possible good could come from you announcing to your dinner that you are right above him, ready to swoop down and eat him? Anyway, Mr. and Mrs. Dain were around last spring and I had hoped that they would nest near us, but sadly I didn't see them in the summer or fall. They must have nested elsewhere with some other lucky neighbor. Now though, they seem to be back for the winter. That is probably because by over-feeding my seed eating birds, I am also inadvertently feeding lots and lots of er... uh... "friends of Mickey". (This is the point where everybody says "Gosh, I sure am glad that Angela doesn't live right next door to me!!!") |

In that picture I posted of Purvis, he hadn't even noticed me and my camera yet. See? His tail isn't even puffed yet. I probably could have gotten even closer, but I liked the way that the flowers highlighted Purvis' natural beauty. Who's a good boy???!!! You are Purvis!!! Yes you are!!! Good skunkie!!! |

It looks like very much like that the dish have rutabagas also called swedes:) Actually swedes are more eaten in Finland as traditional christmas food. But we have higgis here as well called pölsa. |

My guess is that Tae Mussin' Freends means To Missing Friends. My thanks to Janneseti for assisting Angela by providing an accurate translation. I will be raising the glass of whisky in about an hour's time, so anyone wishing to toast "mussin' freends" is invited to raise a glass at about 9pm local time, and just say the words. It is my understanding that such birds screech like that to literally scare their intended dinner stiff so it won't run off and avoid being dinner. (This is the point where everybody says "Gosh, I sure am glad that Angela doesn't live right next door to me!!!") You I wouldn't have a problem with. The skunks that are already here I could do without. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
