Hi!

I’m a second year graduate student in a history of science, anthropology and STS (science, technology and society) program. I was an intern at the SETI Institute in 2008, and had a great time. I’m interesting in looking at how technologies of perception underpin assumptions about life and intelligence. I’m thinking about ideas for dissertation topics, and hope you can help!

I think it would be fabulous to do a chapter on SETI@Home, a program I used as a kid. I was at Berkeley this past summer and met Erica Korpela and David Anderson. I’d like to get a better sense of the platform’s user base, your personal role and experience, and what you think of the project.

Here are some questions. Feel free to post below, Skype me at claireisabelwebb, or message me through BOINC. Thank you!

1. How are you involved? Why were you interested in participating with SETI@Home?

2. What do you in SETI@Home's Community?

3. What is the team experience like?

2. As a kid, I downloaded SETI@Home with the hopes of helping find an alien signal. It seems that a lot of people here also want to design systems that crunch numbers the fastest. What do you see your involvement as working towards?

Thank you!!

Good luck in your investigations.
I am so tempted to say: "Free Beer,"
but it seems to me you are much more
serious than that. I'll think on this and try
to come up with something useful for you to use.

edit:
A donation to my 420 fund would go a long way....

I'm still hunting for Toasters, one is never enough. ;)

Seriously, there is a lot of space to search.

Assumedly it is better to disagree about a couple of things rather than doing anything else.
