Last Thursday, Norfolk Islanders commemorated the anniversary of the sinking of HMS Sirius, the flagship of Britain's First Fleet that made the six-month journey from England in 1788 to establish the first white settlement in Australia.

Oh dear. Are journalists allowed to do this?
Well. Leif Eriksson called the big Island near Canada for Greenland.

Rule Britania.

The big problem with Norfolk Island Chris, which is not mentioned in either of your links, is their long running financial crisis.

There are many more links available on the subject if you Google "Norfolk Island financial situation". ;-)

Basically they have been broke for the last several years and need help badly plus a vast majority of the population (80% of which are Australian citizens anyway) want the take over to happen. That BBC story was very likely based on info sourced from a very small group of wealthy people there that don't want the take over to happen.

But if the British tax payer wants to take over the financial burden facing the island then by all means please do so so that we don't have to.

Cheers.

Since 2010, Norfolk Island has not been raising enough taxes to pay for services on the island and it has been receiving millions of dollars in Australian government subsidies. Now the Australian taxpayer will have to foot a $A136m ($107m, £53m) bill to turn the legislative assembly into a regional council.

If they're independent, why do they get money from Australian taxpayers?
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Greece is an independent country and needs a LOT of money to clean up THEIR mess.
Why must every country in EU but Greece pay for it?
