Ok here is a new one. Ever wonder why when you are late for work, Every traffic light you come to is red? But when going to the dentist to have a root canal Its green all the way:)

Or on a deserted street at night, do you wait for the light to turn green, or just stop and go?

and 1 little tip, which I won't give out, since most don't need to know it.

I learnt the technique (but never used) from an ex Flying Squad sergeant.

"Ready yourself by raising the gun slightly above the target level holding it with both hands. Take a deep breath, slowly lower the gun, aim and fire. That is the technique that the police are taught. You wont get an accurate shot fighting your muscles to hold the gun up, and breathing in and out, or with one hand. Practice means you can do that in less than two seconds".

I'm sorry Chris if we're getting to far off topic. ;-)

Not at all Wiggo, I'm from the Angela K school of thought! If everyone is enjoying themselves and some useful conversation is happening then I'm happy to let it wander for a bit. As indeed all real life conversations do.

@James - Agreed! And why when you get to a bus stop, do you always see the bus disappearing down the road, and you have to wait for the next one?

Close but no Cigar Chris, that might work for something that is static, but not for a moving target, for that you need to not aim for an obvious target, that's all I'll say on that.

Happens all the time for me, almost anyway. Statisticly impossible but there you go:)

This reminds me of when I worked for Sydney Buses as a warranted officer.

Part of my job on occasions was to investigate customer complaints and most of those were on this very subject, so when handling them over the phone the 1st question I asked was for from the complainant was, "What's time please", and in the vast majority of cases their time was slow by quite a bit, which is why they missed their bus.

Even back then our systems were synced with the World Clock, not only our computers, but those fare and data systems in the buses and the system for tracking those buses and their locations at any time.

Cheers.

Aw c'mon vic, for a moving target you aim slightly in front of the direction of movement ...

It's a matter of time and a little distance in aim, a rule of thumb almost. I didn't miss, though I don't think an M16 can hit something 1200m away, though I did try, the bullet just landed in front in the dirt...

Actually at the Camp Perry matches in Ohio, The AR rifles can reach out to 1000 yards.
My daughter before she was deployed to Iraq in 05 had to quailfy at 500 yards.
Back in my service days it was 100 yards. And yes I quailified expert. But 500 yards? No way.

I thought the distance away of the target meant elevating the barrel a certain amount? It certainly did with artillery fire and ships guns, but with modern high powered rifles it's probably not necessary.

Anyhow, moving on. Bearing in mind that the Metre was originally defined as being one ten-millionth of the distance from the Earth's equator to the North Pole (at sea level), on a meridian passing through Paris. The result probably was a little out in 1791, but have you ever wondered why Gravity is 9.81 m/s nearly 10?

It's almost as if the earth was designed to base 10!

Well we humans are designed for base 10. Unless you include toes. Would that be base 20?

I wonder how many kids nowadays don't know how to count in Roman numerals?

The only reason kids need to know Roman numerals these days is to work out when old buildings were constructed.

And when old TV programmes come out of copyright.

Why are days divided in two parts when it comes to clocks?

Back when I was a kid I taught myself how to read Roman numerals so I could tell when an old movie or a cartoon was made. Its a shame new movies and TV shows dont use them any more.

I was shooting at 600m(660 yards), the static target was at 1200m(1320 yards), needless to say, I got close, an M14/M1A would have hit the 1200m target, My superior just wanted to see if I could hit a long range target, long for an M16 I guess. Of course this was back in 1979...

I am astounded by the resistance you people are showing to
the use of Mississippi for measuring time in human terms.

the use of Mississippis for measuring time in human terms.

Maybe because that Mississippis is not known to many peoples.
And the river is not especially human like inches, feets and qubits
And it works only when pronounciating small numbers.
For instance, how long time does it take to say 1,234,555 Mississippis.
I would say about 4 seconds.
