Message 1603826 - Posted: 22 Nov 2014, 0:44:27 UTC - in response to Message 1603582.

Eric worked on a satellite once that got rained on. Somebody forgot to close a dome door. Anyway, it turns out electronics can be "washed". Just don't turn them on until they are dry. The satellite worked fine once it was completely dried.

Absolutely nothing wrong with water and electronics, the water just has to be pure distilled or de-ionized, with no contaminates.
I used to work on 20 kW water cooled amplifiers. The supply voltage was ~35 kV.

It's the conducting contaminating dirt that does the damage.

Or other additives in the water. A few years back I rented about $100K worth of high speed camera and associated electronics, and had just opened the shipping crate when some genius cut the wrong wire while working on the building electrical system and set off the foam sprinkler right above the open crate. The guys we rented it from were very understanding - I would have been looking for somebody to shoot. They came out, carefully dried it all, then declared it all ruined, and shipped us another set the next day. They did ask us, very politely, to be careful with the second set.

Back when I was on the boats, I had the entire control cabinet for an R-114 air conditioning turbo-compressor flooded with seawater. Fortunately, that unit was on stand-by, so it didn't go up in smoke. Took everything apart, rinsed it with D/I water, dried it out, put it back together (6 hours later), and it worked fine. Just glad we were up in the north Pacific, and not down south in warmer waters.....

Amazing stories! The law of averages should have seen a lot more cell-phones
dropped into beer! I guess I've escaped, due to forgetting to
clip mine onto my belt, before heading out.

ps, Mine is an old, Samsung, flip-top, w/Sprint service. OK, but
the reception can be spotty, out in the countryside.

My cell phone is the first one I ever bought.
It still does a great job of being a phone......

Samsung phones are great, I've used nothing else... Mine is still a flip phone, no internet or such, but a 1.7" screen is worthless there...

I have a Samsung Note 2. It's a couple years old now and still working fine, much better than my previous one. It has one small scratch on the screen, but it's no big deal.

As for dropping phones in toilets, ick.

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Julie, that will get rid of whatever is there once updated.

My dumb phone is usually dead until I'm going out in the car somewhere and then I charge it back up again. :-D

Cheers.

Well, it seems this phone may suffer a premature death. It fell off my bedside table and bent the connector on its cord. Apparently, it also caused some damage to the connector inside the phone, because now it only charges from my car cord and one plug-in charger. If they stop working, I may have to replace the phone.

So.... if I had an old style phone, and the lines are
still in,....... I could still use the lines if I hook a
phone up to them?

Is there still active service on the line?

When I shut off my landline, I thought there would still be a dial tone so I could call 911 if necessary. There wasn't, even though my U-Verse is still coming in on those wires.
