Long time, no post.
It looks as if I've stalled at 90.4kg....

There is no need to shame us, Chris. We are just being honest about how incredibly hard it is to consistently change a lifetime of habits.

(The cartoon, however, was hilarious!!!)

I quit reading the original thread a while back and never started on this one, until now. After seeing my doctor yesterday, I have opened the door just a crack to the merest hint of a possibility of stomach surgery for weight loss. Does anyone have anything to say on the subject? I really don't like the idea, but I'm starting to think nothing else is going to work for me.

I have two friends who did the surgery. They both lost around 30kg (66lbs)

I had 2 relatives who had the surgery, one lost weight cause She ate a lot less and the other likes to cook and eats as much as She did before the surgery. Me I can't get any surgery, My relatives paid cash to have this done, from what I've been told it's not inexpensive...

A friend I used to work with had surgery of this kind. She had tried everything to lose weight. Her weight had been in the morbidly obese range for years, because food intake had an obsessive/addictive hold over her. The surgery was performed without complications and her post-surgical recovery was quick. Initially she lost tremendous amounts of weight. She also went through counseling to help her develop a more healthy relationship with food. That piece is probably just as important as the surgery itself.

My friend looks like she has gained back a little weight since her lowest weight point, but she only looks slightly stocky now, as opposed to looking very, very, very unhealthy before the surgery. It has been several years since her surgery and the majority of the weight she initially lost has not come back. It seems like her weight is relatively stable.

My friend's health is tremendously improved and the surgery gave her son back his joyful, playful, energetic mother.

I know a pilot who underwent surgery because he was getting to big to fit under the controls and his results were mixed. He lost plenty of weigh but after a while he was no longer sticking to the diet and was able to override the surgery and gain weight. It's the diet and not the surgery that makes it work so I suggest you ask the doctor for the diet and try living with it before you decide on the surgery.

I know people who have had this done to them. Anglia
and Dena are right in saying that the surgery is
only part of the process.

A friend's daughter (in her mid twenties at the time) was grossly overweight, indeed "life threateningly over weight".
She had been put on all sorts of diets and exercise regimes to no avail.
Finally after much debate, mostly due to her probably not coming out of the operating theater alive, she had the operation. She lost weight, a lot of weight, and while still a "big girl" she is certainly a lot smaller than she used to be, and now looks more like her age than she did pre-operation. Also her quality of life as improved considerably - we are just waiting to hear if there is a "bun in the oven", something that would have been highly improbable five years back.

I kind of suspect that would happen to me too.

My doctor said that if I go for a consult with the surgeon, they will try to put me on the diet first, and she cited an example of a man who did so well with that that he never got the surgery. I think I could do that too. Twice before, I've lost about 50 pounds, but eventually stopped eating so well and it came back.

Another question: does anyone have experience with Weight Watchers?

i think sometimes the surgery acts as a shock to the system, and gives folks the jolt they need to adapt their diet to something more suitable.

That's a distinct possibility. The second time I lost weight was after being in the hospital for a few days with an injured colon.

Weight Watchers, I worked with a guy who used them and he needed the education part of the program to learn how to control his weight. This was a number of years back when dieting information wasn't as available as it is today. For some the support part of the program is useful as well. He lost weight and maintained his weight with the Weight Watchers program. If you need that type of support, it might be be worth while.

I usually react to support as nagging and rebel against it. However, I suppose I could try it.

Does anyone have personal experience they could describe for me? PM if you prefer.

When I was in the hospital for two weeks, I lost weight because I am 5'14" and it takes more food than they put on those plates to feed me. As I have gotten older, I am not so sure that would still apply.
