DNA taken from a shawl found near the body of Catherine Eddowes and that of the female descendant of Aaron Kosminski’s sister under new DNA testing methods were found to be a match. Aaron Kosminski, a Polish immigrant, was 1 of the prime suspects at the time and the killings stopped after Kosminski was forcibly put in Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. http://www.news.com.au/world/dna-tests-prove-that-jack-the-ripper-was-a-polish-immigrant-named-aaron-kosminski/story-fndir2ev-1227050842205 The breakthrough came when Dr Jari Louhelainen, an expert in historic DNA, was commissioned to study a shawl found with Eddowes, the second-last “confirmed†victim of the Ripper more than 125 years ago. So if this is true then the Ripper didn't come to Australia, as this was another theory attached to another suspect at the time. Cheers. |

Very interesting Wiggo - thankyou :) The last documentary I watched on the subject (a few years ago now) did leave me with the impression that he was the most likely of the suspects. Amazing that they were able to follow a DNA trail - bit macabre though - the businessman who bought the shawl... what's THAT about? No need to answer that really... just pondering :) EDIT: He was a Ripperologist apparently... the businessman... not sure how you become one of those... get obsessed maybe... or at the very least, intrigued. ...I could become a Setiologist! :) |

You're welcome Annie and I do think that this did rate a mention for all the mystery that surrounded those murders. It has been so quiet here this morning that I got through catching up on all the news here finally. [edit] I don't know about the businessman himself though maybe 1 of his relatives were a victim of the Ripper. Cheers. |

Thanks Wiggo , Last thing i herd about that was that the Royal Family was involved , guess that shows how long since i checked it out . The marvels of D.N.A testing or horror depending on if your the criminal or the victim . |

Thanks Wiggo, Happy he's dead, glad I was not born then. Me too, but I think He was histories 1st serial killer, a modern day one would be the Hillside Stranger or Son of Sam or the Zodiac Killer, the last one took Me a bit to remember, so far He's never been caught. Maybe recorded history's first serial killer, but I doubt he was actually the first of our species to be so criminally insane. The first time I visited the La Brea tar pits, I saw the fossilized remains of a young prehistoric woman who had been killed and tossed in a tar pit. Man's inhumanity to man goes way back. |

I dont think he was the first either for the same reasons you gave. For proof I give you Caligula. And he isnt the first by a long shot. [/quote] Old James |
