Patient Being Evaluated for Possible Ebola at D.C.'s Howard University Hospital A patient with Ebola-like symptoms is being treated at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., a hospital spokesperson confirmed late Friday morning. The patient had traveled to Nigeria recently. http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Patient-With-Ebola-Like-Symptoms-Being-Treated-at-Howard-University-Hospital-278025181.html Wait and see how this story develops. |

Thats just great, Another possible point of outbreak. And I am not confident we can stop its spread. All flights need to be stopped NOW out of the infected countrys. And yes that would include the US also. Harsh, Hell yes it is. That should have happend 6 months ago. As far as my opinion goes the WHO and our own CDC are talking out of their hats. They have no more clue than we in here do.
Old James |

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next two weeks regarding the degree of exposure to ebola that Mr. Duncan created in his travel to Dallas. People can't be trusted to provide accurate information on an airport or seaport questionnaire regarding their own exposure to the disease. How many other people in the region of the outbreak have jumped on a plane to who knows where after being exposed to ebola? If the possible answer is >1 then the officials have waited too long to shut down travel out of the known limits of the outbreak. It is being said that the virus can mutate at any time making the known facts about how it is spread obsolete. How do they know this hasn't happened already? Well, as far as the CDC goes... They are a government agency. They are part of the US Department of Health and Human Services which is in the Executive Branch of the US Federal Government. Personally, I think it is much more likely that they are being told to say a lot of what they are saying for... political reasons. Director of the CDC: Dr. Thomas R. Frieden. His Boss: Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell Her Boss: President of the United States of America Barack H. Obama I don't think that they are 'clueless'. I think they are being told what to say. Especially since the 2014 'midterm' election is only about a month away. If the People of the USA get the shiat scared out of them over this, they might just blame Obama and his party and vote for the... other... party. |

This is good news. Howard Hospital patient does not have Ebola, hospital official says A person who was being evaluated for Ebola at Washington’s Howard University Hospital does not have the deadly disease, a hospital official said Saturday. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/howard-hospital-patient-does-not-have-ebola-hospital-official-says/2014/10/04/c0059994-4bd5-11e4-891d-713f052086a0_story.html |

Another Case :( CDC Officials Meet Flight After Passenger Shows Possible Ebola Symptoms A United Airilines flight from Brussels was met by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials today at Newark Liberty International Airport after a passenger on board believed to be from Liberia exhibited possible signs of Ebola. The passenger was traveling with his daughter on United Flight 998 and both were removed from the plane by CDC crew in full hazmat gear. Other passengers remained on the plane while the two were being removed. "Upon arrival at Newark Airport from Brussels, medical professionals instructed that customers and crew of United flight 988 remain on board until they could assist an ill customer," the statement said. "We are working with authorities and will accommodate our customers as quickly as we can." http://abcnews.go.com/Health/cdc-officials-meet-flight-passenger-shows-ebola-symptoms/story?id=25965383 |

If that suspected case was ill WHILE they were on the plane, the not only the man and his daughter but ALL the other passengers and crew members on the flight NEED to go straight into quarantine until either it can be proven that the man does not have Ebola, or the full 21 day quarantine period elapses. The man... From Liberia... Flu-like symptoms... vomiting on the flight... ANY other course of action is just sheer... stupidity in my opinion. |

Word is that they determined, rather quickly, that the man does not have the ebola virus. I think, on that basis, they let everyone go about their business. The BAD part of that article: "The travel history is very important to take and it has to be communicated," he said. I have seen this in other news sources as well. Just Thursday, the Hospital was insisting that the physician treating Mr. Duncan on his initial visit to the hospital did NOT have access to Mr. Duncan's travel history. The above quoted statement was released by the hospital Friday. Yes, the Physician treating Mr. Duncan DID have access to his travel history on the night of the 25th during his initial visit to the hospital when he got diagnosed with a 'common viral infection' and sent home with antibiotics (as if THEY do any good against a virus... bacteria, sure, but NOT viruses). Instead of continuing to blame it on 'bad computer system integration', now the blame is squarely where it belongs... Physician error. |

How? A bloody questionnaire? The TEST for Ebola isn't 'rather quick'. It takes, iirc, 1 to 3 DAYS for it to complete. Looks to me like Ebola isn't the only thing contagious coming out of Liberia... It seems that 'very poor judgement' is also spreading from there via cross-border infection greatly assisted by air-travel. |

That's 3 major slip-ups, how many more to come? |

That's what I thought too. From what I have read there is no EPT type test for the ebola virus. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

The BAD part of that article: Time stamps. Was that information still in data entry when the physician opened the record?! You have now seen the #1 issue with electronic medical records. |

ROFL... EPT... "The most advanced technology you will ever pee on..." But the problem with that sort of test is it would not return a positive result until the person was ALREADY contagious (shedding the Ebola virus in their excreted bodily... fluids such as saliva, urine, etc). The only sort of test that exists now that could detect infection BEFORE the person became contagious is a blood test checking for antibodies to the Ebola virus. That means a blood sample. And I am not familiar with any advances in speed-tests for Ebola such as the blood glucose tests that diabetics now use. It would take years to develop, and would be strain-specific and would quickly lose its effectiveness as the virus mutates (as is doing rather rapidly now in West Africa). To the best of my knowledge, capability to accurately test for Ebola requires testing the sample multiple times in a laboratory looking for antibodies to all the various strains in sequence (and also requires a trained lab tech. to interpret the test results). All this takes time. I, frankly, was surprised that it only took as short a time frame as it did in Mr. Duncan's case (in Dallas). This whole situation stinks like someone is playing a variant of what we used to call years ago 'Russian roulette'. Only instead of holding the gun to their own head as they pull the trigger, they are holding it to all of ours. |

Wjen this thread started I took a lot of heat by saying that the WHO should have halted all flights out of Africa. Well now that the horse is out of the stinking barn they are still letting people fly out willy nilly. How many deaths will it take for our stupid president to stop letting people who have been in Ebola country to keep flying in, Unless they have done 21 days quarintine? And the worst part is, We have a very possible pandemic in our own country. And it all could have been prevented. Filling out a form to leave an ebloa infected country. Jeez people wont lie to get the hell out of dodge when death starts flying. And we aint seen nothing yet.
Old James |

What gets me is that they are still allowing people to leave the region with only a promise that they have not been exposed. How long will it take for the disease to spread to Europe and Asia as well? Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required.
