How long does a person need to be isolated to prove that he/she is not infected? I think that should become a protocol before allowing anyone living near a known outbreak site access to international travel, no exceptions.

New question. Is there any way to test a person who has been near an outbreak who shows no symptoms to verify he/she is not infected?

Sierra Leone staggers in Ebola isolation effort

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) -- Some in Sierra Leone ran away from their homes Saturday and others clashed with health workers trying to bury dead Ebola victims as the country struggled through the second day of an unprecedented lockdown to combat the deadly disease.

Despite these setbacks, officials said most of Sierra Leone's 6 million people were complying with orders to stay at home as nearly 30,000 volunteers and health care workers fanned out across the country to distribute soap and information on how to prevent Ebola.

The virus, spread by contact with bodily fluids, has killed than 560 people in Sierra Leone and more than 2,600 in West Africa since the outbreak began last December, according to the World Health Organization. It is killing about half of the people it infects.

I think it would be just some time in quarantine, as any test to get a positive or negative result would take as long as the initial symptoms to appear.

Ebola warning: CDC tells airlines to 'treat all body fluids as infectious'

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, increasing their warnings on Ebola, is advising airlines and jet staff to treat all body fluids as infectious, even on domestic flights.

“Treat all body fluids as though they are infectious,” said the latest CDC update to airlines. The update notes that if Ebola is suspected, aircraft can be cleaned mid-flight. The update is apparently meant to stress the rights airlines have to block anyone who appears "ill" from boarding.

Sierra Leone Concludes Nationwide Ebola Lockdown
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) — Frustrated residents complained of food shortages in some neighborhoods of Sierra Leone's capital on Sunday as the country reached the third and final day of a sweeping, unprecedented lockdown designed to combat the deadly Ebola disease, volunteers said.

While most residents welcomed teams of health care workers and volunteers bearing information about the disease, rumors persisted in pockets of the city that poisoned soap was being distributed, suggesting that public education campaigns had not been entirely successful.

Man bitten by Ebola patient flown to Switzerland

GENEVA (AP) -- Swiss authorities say a male nurse who was bitten by an Ebola patient while working in West Africa has been flown to Switzerland as a precaution.

The health ministry says the unidentified man was working for an international organization in Sierra Leone when he was bitten by a child infected with Ebola on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to release its own predictions for only Liberia and Sierra Leone — the two West African countries that recently have shown the steadiest and most alarming spread of cases.

The CDC calculations are based, in part, on assumptions that cases have been dramatically underreported. Other projections haven't made the same kind of attempt to quantify illnesses that may have been missed in official counts.

CDC scientists conclude there may be as many as 21,000 reported and unreported cases in just those two countries as soon as the end of this month, according to a draft version of the report obtained by The Associated Press. They also predict that the two countries could have a staggering 550,000 to 1.4 million cases by late January.

550,000 to 1.4 million cases just in Liberia and Sierra Leone possible by the end of January. Uh-oh. That sort of case load is quite likely to overwhelm efforts to help. Kinda grim.

AS that is just computer simulation as of now, Its still scary to say the least.
What if it is true. As the death rate is around 50 to 60% what if thousands of people start dying everyday?

We have only seen the start of this.

I can't say i'm surprised.

I'm working on an anti-malarial drug at the moment (i can't be too specific for IP reasons), and it takes me a week to produce 5 mg, sometimes longer.
Lab scale reactions are not good for producing quantities of drugs that can treat humans.
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

CDC: Ebola could infect 1.4 million people by January

If the world doesn't get the Ebola outbreak in West Africa under control quickly, the disease could become a permanent fixture in the region, spreading as routinely as malaria or the flu, the World Health Organization warns Tuesday in a new report.

In the worst-case scenario – if nothing is done to effectively control the outbreak — there could be 1.4 million Ebola cases in Liberia and Sierra Leone by the end of January, according to a report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Grim report :(

Is Ebola Coming To America? Experts Ponder As Ebola Epidemic Rages In Africa.

New CDC and WHO data suggest that Africa’s Ebola outbreak is worse than expected — and in a worst-case scenario, the current Ebola epidemic could become endemic.

And those gloomy projections have experts worried that Ebola will inevitably arrive in the United States.

It can only come to America if protocols are broken or by a terrorist group.

I disagree. It can come here by scared people trying to flee an epidemic in their homeland.
I said right at the start that an immediate crackdown on those leaving the infected countries was needed. Close the borders to all who wanted to leave unless they went in quarintine.
But some of you said that was overboard and not needed.
I ask you now, In hind sight wouldnt that have been better? Contain it at the source and stop the spread?
And the worst part is they still dont know how or what the vector is that started it.
I hope they can contain this. I also hope that the next outbreak of Ebola the WHO sends in such an overwhelming amout of aid that it is erradicated quickly.
