It would seem we have a new #2 mystery cruncher as well jmi. Posting millions of credit per day. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

It would seem we have a new #2 mystery cruncher as well jmi. Posting millions of credit per day. On the one hand they have this way of making me feel so inadequate. On the other hand, they do a lot of work for the rest of us to validate against. And on the third hand, I'm happy to be able to blow-through this data as fast as we can (I wish I had a clue as to how much total data there is for us to-do and what proportion of it we have done). |

It would seem we have a new #2 mystery cruncher as well jmi. Posting millions of credit per day. The last time the question was answered there was a large amount of data backed logged that we have not touched. Once the Green Bank recorder gets up and going there will be even more, but that is a long time off probably. That reminds me of a Led Zeppelin lyric: "Many is a word that only leaves you guessing, guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know." The title of that tune is certainly appropriate: "Over the Hills and Far Away"
See, we already know that. I think Eric said they would record something like sixty-nine terabytes per day. I doubt they have the capacity to record sixty-nine terabytes per day. What would be interesting to know is 'anything quantitative.' We already know there is "a lot." So, we've done "a lot" and we've got "a lot more to do." I'm hip. I'm also intellectually unsatisfied. EDIT: I thought about what I said and it might seem a "demand" to satisfy idle and useless curiosity; so I'll explain. If we already have enough data to keep the project in work for the next decade, I may not be as motivated to contribute money toward gathering more data to sit on a shelf. If ntpckr is never going to run, I might find myself less motivated to crunch as much as I do (it does cost money). If... So a few answers to a few questions that should be answerable goes a long way in my formulating my own plans and opinions. |

I would say we have a plethora of data. It would be nice to see the rate of data gathered vs the amount processed. Since we are looking at MB & AP from the same data would we include both figures in the amount processed? Then I wonder at what point will we outpace the data collection rate. Greetings, I have to ask: If all they do is attach to SETI to burn-in 100 new servers, then shut SETI down on them, where's the dedication, the respect for the science? SETI is not set up as being a burn-in tool. Granted, many people don't consider searching for E.T. as being true science. But still... :/ Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, It does not require respect or dedication to fire up a bunch of servers and attach to the project. My devotion to the project is something that an IT guy does not feel when they just want to load test their servers. That being said, I don't have any problem with their doing so. It still serves the project. Of course, it would be wonderful if in return, some of these guys with obviously deep pockets would pony up for a donation or two. And I just PM'd both individuals to ask if they would be so inclined as to make a little donation to help the project out. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Well unless something goes drastically wrong, Charles will be top of the heap by next weekend. Not bad for only being here for just under 14 months. ;-) Cheers. |

There is another Charles Long in Asteroids@Home. Participant since 22 Jun 2014 and he/she is top 1 already, with huge RAC over 21M, second best has 600K. Coincidence? I really hope these computers are HIS to play with as HE wants, and do not belong to either his employer or client(s) and are in a site where he is responsible for paying the energy bills. I would be more than a little pee'd if I were to find he was using hardware I was renting in a co-location site somewhere. And if I were the owner of a co-location site and found he was hammering my energy bill I'd be after him. I do hope he is above board in all respects and we don't have a repeat of the "Nez Event", but on a bigger scale... I do hope he is above board in all respects and we don't have a repeat of the "Nez Event", but on a bigger scale... If the few posts they made. They stated they saw using BOINC as a positive way to load test the data center(s). Normally a co-location facility hosts your computer hardware. While supplying the other services such as power and network connectivity. Data center would host the software/services you need. The company that I use for my web hosting does both, but they are in different locations. So I wouldn't be worried about a data center loading up the active host boxes with BOINC & reducing their performance. I wouldn't imagine that anyone would miss a large increase in the power usage from unauthorized use in a data center. I only have 1 42U rack at work about 3/4 filled with old PowerEdge servers & disk arrays. With them crunching the extra power consumption & load on the UPS systems is not small. The UPSs go from about 30% at idle to 80-85% at full load. With newer hardware I would expect the difference to be even greater. Our department "pays" a fixed amount for power usage in our labs no matter what we use. The boss man told me that we should be getting our monies worth out of what we are "paying". By "pay" it is just a line item in our budget that was assigned by the bean counters. That's the main reason why I no longer bother with stats sites as the stats are meaningless to the ordinary cruncher as they have no hope in hell of even attaining 1% of the totals already displayed. I believe it was Chris S who suggested that Boinc/Projects now display individual & companies as separate categories. The individual in this discussion is no way an individual cruncher per se. He is using his employers equipment to rack up such large numbers. He may have the legal authorisation to stress test those servers which is good for all the projects concerned, but there should be no way possible for individuals such as him to hold an individual account - it should be a company account! |

As long as the results are valid. The boost to the project should be appreciated. |
