On Christmas morning we heard a knock ("clapping", hence the word Yule Clap) on their door or on the window, a rural tradition which meant that the village youth sneaking around on Christmas Eve and knocked on the cabins. When someone opened the youth threw a joke gift, which could consist of a piece of wood or a straw figure. On the gift, they often had attached a note with a verse that explained why the recipient is honored with the nice gift. It was important not to get caught in the act during Yule Clap awarding because the verses could be quite nasty and coarse-grained. Christmas presents are still called Julklappar (Yule Claps). One of Odin's many names is also JÃ³lnir, he has thus been tied to Yule and its celebrations. Yuletide most important element seems to have been - as the phrase "drink Yule" also implies - the ritual beer dricking for good year and peace. God Jul. Cheers and Hell Thor. Interesting Janne, studied a lot about the different gods in different cultures but never heard this before, thanx. Almost every tradition in our Christmas celebration are from Norse traditions.
