I can't handle anything citrus or anything blue cheese & penicillin related(Penicillium roqueforti), one gives Me acid indigestion and the other I'm allergic to. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I used to get acid indigestion from tomatoes until I discovered that pileing heaps of pepper on them neutralizes the acid. Don't think it would go too well with OJ though. :-0 |

I only like juice in my mimosas... Had to google mimosas, they sound good. Too bad I'm not supposed to drink any more. Pumpkin and sweet potato soup just finished cooking and gets the thumbs up for taste. Easy too. 500 ml water, 1 heaped teaspoon of chicken stock powder, pinch of salt, 200 grams each pumpkin and sweet potato cut into 15mm cubesapprox. Put in a saucepan ,bring to boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until veges are tender. Pour nto a big bowl and enjoy. Simple! |

Mmmmm... Pi(z*z)a...:) That was my lunch yesterday. Hit the local pizza place's lunch buffet. Salad with lettuce, baby spinach leaves, shredded carrots, red onions, sliced black olives, mushrooms, raisins, cherry tomatoes and vinaigrette dressing, 4 small slices of pizza, 3 of which had veggies on them. Stopped eating at "comfortable" (not "full"), wasn't hungry, not even for a candy bar, the rest of the day. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Donald, enjoying a salad first before diving into the stuff that is worse seems like a very good plan to me. |

I need to figure out when my body is signaling me. Most of the time it seems to be saying "Go ahead, eat a little more." |

I need to figure out when my body is signaling me. Most of the time it seems to be saying "Go ahead, eat a little more." It's the crack sprinkled on the Chinese buffets. I stay away from all you can eat. What a terrible concept. When did those start? It seems like salad bars started the trend in the 80's. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Angela, for me, it's an actual, physical "click - you're done." It's real sensation. Maybe, as your stomach shrinks, you'll start to recognize it. Sometimes I try to order a salad at a restaurant, followed by an appetizer as an entree. Mid-price restaurant entrees tend to be larger food portions than are good for me, and since I have so little control once served something delicious, I find that it is better to limit what is placed in front of me. I feel sorry for men in this regard. Ordering an appetizer as an entree, asking for salad dressing on the side, splitting an entree with a dining companion or sharing a dessert is socially acceptable behavior for women. Restaurants staff members are probably more used to women being "higher maintenance" in this regard. I'll bet it is difficult for men to do similar things, even though it might be better for men to habitually do so. |

Even with an extra 2 PB&SP sandwiches to feel full or for lunch(1 sandwich each), it seems I've lost another pound again, the scale today said 385lbs. SP is for Strawberry Preserves, though I do have some weak grape jelly... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I just don't remember restaurants being the evil empire when I was growing up. Overly processed food and the proliferation of restaurants in general has hurt us. I grew up with my mom at home, and a healthy dinner every night. We went out to eat for fun on the weekend, and you didn't worry about calories because the restaurants served normal stuff. My family ate in restaurants extremely infrequently when I was a kid. There were four children in our family and I think my dad was always weighing the fear of upcoming college costs against "frivolous" things like giving my mom a day off from cooking. Poor mom!!! This is probably why I enjoy eating out so much as an adult. In my mind, eating out is still very much a treat, especially if the restaurant dining experience involves ethnic specialties that I would be hard pressed to recreate well in my own kitchen. But Gordon, I think you are right about overly processed foods and the proliferation of restaurants contributing significantly to American obesity. In addition, our standard of living has fallen in this country such that it is now a luxury to have one parent stay at home and do all the things that our middle class mothers were able to do for us... cook real foods, provide loving highly invested care for children, cart kids around to activities that keep them healthy, engaged and out of trouble (school sports, drama clubs; music lessons, trips to the library etc). It is fascinating to me to see how closely intertwined are the topics of food/weight control and politics. |

At your weight, height and activity level you probably need about 3000 calories per day to maintain your current weight. Drop 500 calories a day and your weight loss will continue. "Weigh" to go, Vic! |

I doubt I need to drop more calories Angela, since I am dropping pounds again, I just need to keep eating eggs and sausage for breakfast and not pancakes and syrup, which made Me gain weight. I've yet to find a low calorie pancake syrup that doesn't cause more problems than it's worth. A week or so on pancakes for breakfast(since a bag is only $5.99 for a 5lb bag of Krusteaz Pancake Mix) and margarine is $2.99 and syrup is $1.99 just to stretch a budget, though that might be coming to an end or at at least not so often, DC politics not withstanding of course... sigh. Angela, for me, it's an actual, physical "click - you're done." It's real sensation. Maybe, as your stomach shrinks, you'll start to recognize it. While I usually start my salad as soon as it arrives, I tend to eat more of it DURING the main course, which sometimes gets funny looks from wait staff who don't know me. But it does slow me down. When I am dining by myself, i tend to bring the newspaper or a magazine to read while I eat, which also slows me down. Otherwise I might gobble it down like a starving wolf, and suffer the consequences for hours after.... I am seeing a lot more meal-splitting among seniors (folks my age and older). And at least in the places I frequent, the staff is not shy about offering a take-out box when they see you are done eating but there is still plenty of food on the plate.
