Hi Grant,

This is a great discussion topic. I have rabbits inside, and turtles outside. Both are pretty low maintenance pets, but as with any animal, they have special needs. I'm certainly no expert, but if anyone has questions about caring for rabbits or turtles, I'd be happy to share what I've learned over the years.

One of the turtles is most likely an Eastern Box, and one is possibly an Ornate. The other two, which are the babies I raised, seem to be a mix of the two, so I think I have the parents. They were gifted to me by my x-gf's kids several years ago. The kids found them on their grandmother's farm, and decided to give them to me, and lo and behold a few weeks later, two babies hatched in my backyard! I give them some leftover people food, but they are omnivores and eat pretty much anything. They love my garden tomatoes, and herbs.

As for my rabbits, they need 24/7 access to Timothy hay, which I buy from a woman in Washington state. I get a 45 pound compressed bale of 3rd cut Timothy every three months, and they do great with that. Fresh cool water, and unlimited 3rd cut Timothy hay, and you'll have healthy, happy indoor house bunnies for many years(Peter and Bugs are 9, and a well-cared for indoor pet rabbit should live 12 - 15 years).

Grace being female is 15lbs and from what I've read that is about it, She is smart and loves water, quirks.

Yay - an animal care thread again!! Don't know if anyone knows how to wean a cat off tinned tuna fish and rice Krispies? :/ Or at least know a way of leaching out the salt from the fish? I've tried all the tricks I know over the past year (since taking her in after she was abandoned in a cardboard box near some bins with her litter mates) but she won't eat anything else at all. Stumbled across the tuna fish when desperately trying to get her to eat something, and discovered her taste for the cereals when she kept trying to get into my son's breakfast. :) All the others eat normally.

heh heh heh - mine rarely communicate with one another unless I accidentally jab myself in the eye with one.

anniet, it's crucial that you get some other source of food; your cat can go blind and/or get dilated cardiomyopathy due to a taurine deficiency. It can take a long time for the damage to show up. The mercury content is also dangerous.

You might start mixing a commercial canned food, probably should keep it wet to mimic the moisture content of the tuna. Tuna flavored would be a good start. Mix the food in increasing parts of new food over the old over several days. Try the little cans of different flavors to see what's palatable. Whatever happens, don't let your cat go for more than 24-36 hours without eating, as that can cause "fatty liver" (feline hepatic lipidosis) which can be rapidly fatal.

You'll just have to be hard-hearted about the human food. And it's likely the milk your cat is going for. Most adult cats are lactose intolerant, but if you haven't noticed any ...er... loose bathroom habits, it's probably OK for your kitty to have a little bit, say a tablespoon, or so.

Hope that helps a bit.
CC

Thanks CC, she's not lactose intolerant but is extremely stubborn when it comes to me mixing other food in with the tuna. I will persevere though. Thanks for the 24-36 hour window guide. The vet just says to leave her for as long as it takes as she'll eat when she's hungry - but the last time I did so, she went nearly 48 hours and then tried eating a plastic bag despite a varied array of catfood avaliable to her. As a result, I've slipped back into just giving her what she will eat as I've been somewhat preoccupied with other matters, but I know she's not doing as well as her litter mates, and I can't let that continue because she's a real sweetie in every other way imaginable.

The Fryja cat is lactose intolerant, but she does not
know it so we have to keep her away from any dairy...
I know a cat will not starve willingly. I believe that
if you put out food it will all end up well....

Thanks celttooth :)

I must say, I'd never come across lactose intolerance in cats till I came to the UK.

Those cats keep pushing each other aside, at least after the commercial. Still there was no squeezing, just an utter drip...
