Thanks, as soon as I saw those I zapped the drive (fortunately, not long after installing the new components I booted up WHS & backed it up - phew).

Should have zapped it some time ago as not done a clean re-installation since swapping over from the Win 7 beta.

Boy is this baby fast now :-)

As for boinc, no sweat just copied over the program data info and all eight cores running with max temp so far 31.8 (gpu steady at 29c atm).

Having problems with Photobucket atm otherwise I would have you all laughing.... After reinstalling win 7 ran pc wizard & the temps duplicated themselves - 1st lot seemed ok but the second said all cores running at 255.9 (took a snapshot) :-)

Only problem now is reinstalling all my programs :-(

I had to do that a while back. I bought an external hard drive, partitioned it and made separate backups of the operating systems and certain programs to it for each of my 3 computers. That way if I ever have to reinstall, I can just copy it from the external HD. Updating would be the only other thing after I reinstall. Good to hear it's up and running again

That's why I like my Windows Home Server, excellent just for those reasons alone. Currently installing 149 updates, with more to come :-(

Keeping an eye on the temps for now - currently at 48.9 for the cores & 29 for the gpu.

While checking out the system when that autochk issue cropped up, found 1x120mm fan dead with another not running right. As they are the originals from new (2008), have ordered a set of new ones & might as well replace them all.

Message 1507662 - Posted: 23 Apr 2014, 17:50:57 UTC

Over the weekend, had another fan die but still...

Fitted all new 120mm fans a short time ago, but was worried about fitting the exhaust fan...

...easy.

@Mike Thanks again, that is one superb cooler.

@Zalster, the R1000 can take 2x 140mm fans so on next overhaul, will replace the 120mm's.

Also on next overhaul, going to take Mike's advice & use MX4 - that would be something having all 8 cores running 100% with temps only 29c :-)

Only problem is I'm going to have to consider a dedicated fan controller as 6x 120mm & 1x140mm is a bit too much on the ears :-(

Been running just over 90 minutes since fitting all the fans...

... hmmn, wonder if I could get it down to 25c? (eventually) :-)

Thanks. On checking found that I bought the Coolermaster R1000 on 19th July 2008 with the build completed the following day. Coolermaster states that their fans are rated for 50,000 hours (that's 5.72 years), so they lasted well beyond their rating.

Have fitted 4 of these...

Coolermaster Sickleflow 120mm

..let's hope they last as long :-)

I just bought 2-140 mm of the same manufacturer. Going to put them on my #2 on the removal side panel. Been watching the temps on 2 of my GPUS going up now that it is summer. Hopefully these will help bring down that temp. I was hoping to put a 8 core in there as well but there isn't enough room for the radiator. So now I have extra parts. Thinking of a new build here in a few months with those spares. Come on tax refund already!!

Now that is has warmed up somewhat, temps still not bad...

However, I'm going to run a test tomorrow.

With the cpu fans pulling air in, they are too close to the exhaust fan, so going to change that to push instead of pull & use the 2 top fans as exhausts(as heat rises, have the bottom fan pulling cool air in).

ATM, with all but one fan pulling, it isn't doing too badly.

Nice test :-)

Switching the top fans to 140mm & using MX-4, might just hit 25c.

From the picture you posted and the orientations of your fans you seem to have a slight issue...

rear case fan seems to be trying to exhaust air out of case,

going inward, your back cpu cooler fan seems to be trying to pull air the opposite direction, into your case.

the fan in the middle of your cooler seems to be going in the same way, pushing air to the front of your case.

so your setup looks like this.

<<< >>> >>>

You might achieve better results lining them all in the same flow direction, as your back two fans are just fighting to pull the air in different directions. You want to take the hot air from your CPU and put it directly out the back of the case as long as your case isn't backed up to a wall (keep a good 6 inches at least away from the wall)

To do this, turn your CPU fans to point in the other direction.

Here's a nice little poser for the IT guru's...

Now that the new cruncher is humming away, I want to get back into the routine of maintaining my personal backups. I have a caddy that I use with 8x500gb data drives (1-4 & 1a-4a)

I had this issue several years ago & could not resolve, but fortunately the mobo's in use had 1 or 2 IDE connections. This new mobo has none so use a sata card (2xsata & 1xIDE).

Card works well. However, every time I attach my IDE DVD-RW & Data drive, lose the DVD icon in Windows & on the bios the data drive shows up as gobblygook.

Using the IDE connection with 2 hard drives, both are seen and vice versa with optical drives.

I am aware of setting the drives to Master/Slave, so ideas anyone?

Have tried several cables, same issue.

If the cable(s) have a blue connector one end (for the mothetboard/card), and a hole some way up the ribbon part, it's a cable select ATA100/133 cable, so shouldn't need to set that as master/slave, but both drives as cable select instead.

Thanks Ozz. All the cables I have are blue one end but no hole in ribbon that I can see.

However, I'll shut it down & try C/S. With C/S are the drive jumpers required still or should they be removed?

Edit: forget that last comment, drives have a C/S setting, so going to try that.

Depends on the drive I think, so check the little diagram on top. My vague memory suggests the no-pins for CS probably is correct though, and also some drives have a parking position so you don't lose the jumper. On the cable Some just omit a pin, so probably technically it's still a hole :)

Okay, that was short sharp & sweet. C/S works. Unfortunately only with 2x optical drives & 2x hard drives. Using one of each on the same cable seems to be a problem.

This mobo has 3x PCI-Ex1 slots( unfortunately 1 is blocked by the gpu) so will try another sata card when I get one(the extra sata's will come in handy anyway), as I think it could be a problem with the card or the driver.

Sorry Ozz, only saw your post after I posted. Rig back up & running, but as I have some work to do on it at the weekend, I'll check the card then.
