R.I.P. Harold

Harold Ramis, the actor whose dry delivery powered comedies like "Ghostbusters" and whose comic instincts helped him behind the camera as the director of smash hits like "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze That," died early Monday.

He was also the (brilliant) scriptwriter for Groundhog Day (and has a cameo in it.) That's what I remember him for and what made it one of my personal favorites... top 10 at least, and an absolute must-see especially at this time of year and with someone special if you've somehow missed this gem.

Last I heard they were getting ready to do another Ghostbusters and re-start the franchise. They had finally talked Rick Moranis out of retirement to reprise his role. Now Egon won't be in it, if it gets finished at all. :-(

According to Harold Ramis and others who shot the original Ghostbusters, the ghost Slimer was put in the movie in place of John Belushi, who was supposed to be the 5th Ghostbuster but died before filming. Perhaps they'll do that for Egon.

So many good movies that he was in: Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Stripes, Meatballs, Animal House, Caddyshack, and the National Lampoon series to name a few. All the best comedies of the 70's and 80's. Very proud to have him as a fellow Illinoisan!

But he lived in suburban Chicago so he could raise his family away from Hollywood.
