Hearts & prayers go out to all in Moore, Oklahoma as a massive tornado just ripped thru it this afternoon. It stayed on the ground for approx. 1 hr and watched most of it on MSNBC. Two schools completely gone along with several neighborhoods. This thing was over a mile wide. Tornado broke apart and is recycling again N.E. of the city as I key this post. Listening to reports, this community was devastated on May 3, 1999 and today's storm took the exact same path of destruction. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

Of those 91(so far), 20 are children, the tornado according to the TV News was 2.5 miles wide and to think a few years ago some wanted to defund NOAA and FEMA... But I digress... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Makes me very sad to think about the many lives that have been lost and those that have been changed forever. That town got hit by a monster, in 1999 Moore had been flattened, now 14 years later... Utter devastation, I can hope for the best, but I fear, the worst is yet to come. :( The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I think it depends on where one is in proximity to a river and the soil type, The TV news got some official numbers in finally: 51 dead 101 found alive The search goes on with rescue teams and their dogs searching... My ideal house there would be mostly covered with soil covered 1'-2' thick walls made with steel reinforced concrete, plus some sort of roll down steel or titanium shutters for the doors and windows. Odds are it would be on the expensive side possibly. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Truly shocking events, but wouldn't it sensible to insist that all new housing in "Tornado Alley" had tornado proof basements? These disasters swill continue to happen for decades. As Vic notes, it depends on how close they are to a river - loose, sandy river-bottom soil does not well support heavy basements. But even when a large portion of a town is destroyed, rebuilding to new standards doesn't necessarily include upgrading existing homes and commercial buildings. And this storm was larger, and cut a wider path, than they are used to dealing with... Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Tornado bunkers, may well become a statuary requirement in time for these Tornado prone areas. A sad update... 24 dead, 9 of which were children, some were double counted in the confusion. 20,000 displaced families. 237 injured. The tornado was rated an EF-5, which means the tornado had winds between 200 and 210 mph. The tornado was 1.3 miles across at it's base. The path was 17 miles long and 45 minutes duration. Oh and there may be $1 Million in insurance claims by the survivors, at least. The Huffington Post says Insurance claims could be in the $3 Billion range. Incredible amount of destruction... Minor correction - EF5 means the tornado had winds in in excess of 200mph. Five is the top of the scale, so no range just a lower limit. The Oklahoma tornado was measured/calculated as having a wind speed in the range 200-210mph, and so has been graded as EF5.
