411 was conveyed to Metra and painted in its red and blue. Eventually, it went into work train service. The Museum repainted it back to C&NW yellow and green.

Last fall, it was disguised as "Chicago Commuter Rail Authority" 411 for an episode of Chicago Fire.

CB&Q 9911A had its red nose stripes backdated to the original black. This photo is from a rare excursion out of the Museum, to Train Festival 2011 in Rock Island. It is seen here at Bureau, IL, on a public trip from the Festival.

(The small pics are links to larger ones on my flickr page.)

Trains magazine did a collectors guide to the BIG BOY. I thumbed through it and just had to buy it. That was one awesome engine.

The front cover has a blurb saying, where the boys are: How to see all 8 giants.
So must be there are 8 still around.

Ive read but dont know if it is true that steam locomotives were never perfected. Once diesels came around steam was seen as a deadend.

I wonder with modern technology how much farther steam could be advanced?

Does anyone have a side by side photo of Big boy and the worlds most powerfull diesal?

Well by the "worlds most powerful diesel" did you mean the EMD DDA40X

If so then the best I can find is this

or this

DDA40X 6900 and Big Boy 4023 not exactly "side by side"

I think because of the way they were placed it is difficult to get a good photo of both engines at the same time!

I am sure David will know if there are any better ones.

The EMD DDA40X was a 6,600 hp (4.92 MW) D-D diesel-electric locomotive built by the General Motors EMD division of La Grange, Illinois for the Union Pacific Railroad. Nicknamed "Centennial" and "Big Jack", the DDA40X uses two diesel engines (each providing 3,300 hp (2.46 MW)) and remains the most powerful single-unit diesel locomotive type ever built.

But it had two engines. For a single engine you have

The AC6000CW is a 6,000 horsepower (4,500 kW) diesel electric locomotive that is built by GE Transportation. This locomotive, along with the EMD SD90MAC, is the most powerful single-engined diesel locomotive in the world, surpassed in power by only the dual-engine EMD DDA40X.

AC6000CW

Though a pure electric loco using catenary that had 10,000hp... The GM10 was an electric locomotive (11kv, 25Hz), only 1 was ever built back in 1976, it was intended for mining operations I've read.

Trains magazine states that the big boys had about 7,000 horse power. I find that amazing.
Does UP intend to tour the country? Id love to see that engine live.

On the UP's lines they could only do so where tunnels and bridges allow, other RR systems would most likely forbid such an excursion or incursion into their territories.

Thats true. I read a little more and UP had to strengthen bridges, Lay 130 LB rail. Redo curves and what not. Bummer, Id love to see one running high speed on a straight away. That has to be awesome.

This is a fascinating and educational thread.

My contribution is not of trains per se, but it is of an old RR bridge re-purposed for pedestrians, here on the river in Louisville, Kentucky. The bridge began it's life in the 1890's as part of the Big Four Railroad. Time was up for the bridge around 1968, when I was born. The approaches were removed, and it sat like a work of art until finally it was re-opened on the Kentucky side, last year, with a spiffy spiral walkway, and the side across the river is set to open soon. I love it! Here are some pics I took from just a few days after it was newly christened~

Made preparations for short trip to see some loco...

Jellico Rd to Marine Rd and then to Dusty Trail and Marine Rd, the map doesn't show Jellico and Dusty ever meeting, I hope I can get there, cause it's awfully close to the Marine Base on the map, plus some roads are just lines on the map and not roads, Jellico Rd might end and Marine Rd could be on UPRR Property, not a public road, in Barstow the 4-8-8-4/UP 4014 Big Boy will be at the Amtrak Station in Barstow for all of 15 Minutes... I'm going to try for Barstow first, then Yermo, the 4014 will be 14.5 hours at Yermo...

Not sure what map you are using but on Google maps is does, you have to follow the road down but according to me;

X marks the spot and it is right next to a rail line that runs almost outside the main yards.

Also they have said they want as many people to see 4014 as possible so I suspect they will allow people to view and take pictures.

Ok I just got back from both Barstow and Yermo, Oh Bernie the UP parked the train some what down the tracks to avoid blocking the RR crossing, so the 4014 was parked near the water tanks where Jellico turns right to avoid the yard, decent amount of people even Trains Magazine(Green/Silver vest & Orange Stripes) was at both locations and I got to shakes hands with Drew of Trains and Model Railroader Magazine fame. They had the brakes and the whistle working too, I think the whistle could only be used when there was enough air pressure.

Taken while under the 1st Street Bridge in Barstow CA
