We were talking a while back about Big Boy #4014 being moved to Wyoming for restoration. Some good pics with this story.

Yes, that is a good story. Writer actually got it right.

Here's the detailed schedule for the trip to Cheyenne.

And to think ALCO built 25 of those Monsters for the UP, it would be nice if they had a working SP 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward Locomotive for that Promontory celebration in 2019, CP or Central Pacific is a Southern Pacific predecessor railroad, both CP/SP and UP met at Promontory to drive home the golden spike to open the 1st transcontinental railroad, which was made possible by US Governmental land grants, soldiers and such. The SP 4-8-8-2 is an oil burner built by Baldwin Locomotive Works(BLoW)... But I'm just day dreaming...

THAT is an AMAZING looking train!

And that is also the very last example of its type left in world too, so I doubt it will be running on the rails anytime soon.

That IS sad. I suppose it's something that there is still one left for us to appreciate. Know it's a little off topic, but as soon as I saw it it reminded me of those wonderful steamboats or paddle steamers...

Not sure why :) Now I've put them together, they look nothing alike :)

Yes, it would be nice to see that run again, but no way is it ever going to happen.

Almost as good, and at least a bit closer to the realm of possibility, is that UP would make an exception to its "our engines only" rule and allow SP 4449 to go to the ceremony at Promontory. They could justify it with the lawyers by deadheading it there with no public excursions on UP tracks.

I'll be kind of surprised if they don't have 844 and 3985 there as well. And just about every passenger car in their fleet.

I agree David, considering UP owns the SP now, you'd think they'd be one big happy family... Sigh.

Hey David! I got this from a mutual friend and thought I'd post this, I'll be there, since it's in My back yard, so to speak. Jealous?

The Big Boy 4014 will be at Yermo Union Pacific railyards over night on Monday 28th - Tuesday 29th April

And unless I have forgotten geography or Google maps is wrong, that puts it about here:

On Good Fridays at my club it has become tradition that we carry out our annual steam test for our minature steam locomotives. I am glad to say that one of locos passed. The other one is in bits.

Actually 7 1/4", its 7 1/2" in USA and Canada, and their 5" is actually 4 3/4".
I don't know why there is difference, especially when one is smaller and the other larger.

How about this one.

Nice tank engine, real steam too, takes some land for all that, that's definitely narrow gauge to Me, I know it's a model of a standard gauge loco. This is a live steam Shay geared locomotive, now that would be neat to own over here and no I don't own any locomotives.

Now if you want size, have I got something for you...

The Virginian Triplex a 2-8-8-8-4 steam locomotive, only 1 was ever built in this wheel arrangement, the other 3 were Erie Triplex 2-8-8-8-2 locomotives.

From what I've read they weren't really all that powerful.

Oi! we are talking large models! Are there any 1/2 size ones anywhere?

When you go above 15" gauge you are moving from miniature railways to narrow gauge, though you could build a 7 1/4" model of an 15" gauge engine then you would get half scale.

The trouble with going bigger is that things start to get very heavy indeed. A member of my club is building a Big Boy in 7 1/4" gauge, the link below shows the hassle we loading club stand at Alexandria Palace Exhibition with basic chassis that he has so far built.

Sounds like that Big Boy might require a fork lift when the loco is fully assembled, still Wow!

I like trains. They are so strong and sensual. My boyfriend used to like trains too. Until he got too close, and one ran him over.

As rules-qualified personnel in the front of the train today, I participated in calling out each signal as we got close. The main motorman of the day was also the dispatcher (standard procedure on a slow day; a train operator can also be the dispatcher if there are a maximum of two trains running) and also happens to be the newly-named Assistant Superintendent of the museum. He gave me various tips about operating at certain points along the line.

Unfortunately, I blew one signal call. We were coming to a Diverging Approach and I called Approach.

At the end of the day, I rode along as the crew put the car away in the barn. Called the position of each switch along the way, too. The car, btw, was Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee 749, a handsome green and red steel interurban.

It has been reported that IRM is now sending the only remaining E5 in the world, CB&Q 9911A, to Streamliners at Spencer along with C&NW 411. Wish I could go.

CB&Q 9911A, pretty.

An F7A unit that missed the torch, interesting.
