Martin as you run Linux why the hell do you care what happens to us Inferior Windows users?... Special note: Windows users should not be considered 'inferior' in any way. If anything, it is more that they are victim to exploitation "for Marketing purposes". And if you haven't already realized: I support multiple platforms/OSes as part of my IT support. Out of all of them, Windows uniquely continues to be by far the greatest pain all round for my support even though the Windows stuff is in effect only acting as an office app and web browsing platform... And I've had to give up trying to support Windows FOC for various friends... Various others are on Linux (Kubuntu and more recently Mageia) and that lets us talk about more other things now in that their computers are no longer the butt of various stale jokes... Windows truly is an astounding success of Marketing. Shame about that for the users... IT is very much what we make it... But this is a Windows thread... A better question is why there is such widespread use still of the antique Windows XP? Probably for the same reason i still have two computers in the lab running XP (one connected to the HPLC system, the other to the UV/Vis photometer) and one running 95 (the IR spectrometer). The computers wouldn't be capable of running later versions of windows, thus requiring a hardware upgrade, which isn't necessary as they still work just as well as they always have. Using my mother as an example, all she does with the PC is browse the internet, send email and type out the occasional letter. Now, she has an old computer which in this case runs Xubuntu, but it originally ran XP which for her purposes would be quite sufficient. What's her incentive to upgrade a perfectly functional machine in order to run a new operating system when she doesn't do anything to require it. This is a point that a lot of the techies who bemoan people sticking with XP seem unable to comprehend. All these new features that Win8 boasts, many users don't want or need. If i told my mother that her new operating system comes with 'Deep Cloud Integration' she'd set up a dehumidifier next to it! Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

I've also met a lot of so called tech support experts that don't deserve that title let alone a job that goes with that title too. Cheers. |

If i told my mother that her new operating system comes with 'Deep Cloud Integration' she'd set up a dehumidifier next to it! Oh... should I not have done that then...? :) I'm kind of a loyal type - and have quite simple needs - so when an OS works for all the things I need it to work for, I'm perfectly happy to stick with it. I do get highly insulted when my loyalty is repaid with - say - explosions for example... }:[ but I do and will adapt. I just don't like being forced to do so just because a company can't shift a possible mistake off the shelves. |

UPDATE... UPDATE... UPDATE! Nope. That's not for new news. IT's supposedly what is good for you! For thrice an update in the news: Chinese Government Shuns 'Expensive' Windows 8 Senior officials are looking to patch up the outdated Windows XP software rather than pay for an "expensive" upgrade... Why Microsoft Is Dumping Support For Windows 8.1 In a move certain to raise the ire of users of Microsoft’s Windows operating system the software giant has announced that next month it will cease support for Windows 8.1. But that operating system is barely eight months old and already [is] an upgraded version of the Windows 8 system that failed to impress many users... so why is it ending support for Windows 8.1?... Microsoft's new, new Windows cadence: Once a year is not enough What comes after Windows 8.1 Update? Sources say a second update is on its way, and that Microsoft's unified OS group is picking up the delivery pace... ... The need for speed in "fixing" Windows 8/8.1 is no doubt also spurring OSG. Even with Windows 8.1 Update, which added features that help mouse/keyboard users better navigate Windows 8, many business customers still don't find Microsoft's latest version of Windows familiar and compelling enough for mass adoption... Or should the Microsoft mantra be: Upgrade, UPgrade, come and get yer UPgrades!? (For those humorously unaware, Steve Ballmer was famous for his repeated implorations to the faithful! :-O ) IT is what we make it! Here we go... Where do you want to go from here? Windows9? Soon?? Microsoft may actually be on the right track with Windows 9 New leaked details -- including some from the reemerged Russian blogger Wzor -- bring renewed hope for a better Windows 9... And for an intriguing review: Put to the test: Microsoft's Office 365 on the iPad and Mac The good news: Office and Exchange now work credibly on the iPad. The bad news: Microsoft is being as proprietary as Apple For years, the world has been begging Microsoft to release its Office suite for the iPad. Finally, in February, Microsoft finally did so -- and Microsoft produced a solid set of apps in the form of Office for iPad. But there was a price: You must have an Office 365 subscription, and your files are essentially locked into Microsoft's own storage services (OneDrive and SharePoint)... ... All in all, Office 365 feels rickety when it comes to connectivity and interoperability. My company's operations team that hadles Office 365 says bluntly that the issue is that Microsoft's compatibility with its own services across platforms is poor, with OS X and Android particularly shortchanged. It's raised the issues with Microsoft in hopes that Microsoft will level the playing field... ... Apple and Google play the same walled-garden game, particularly in the mobile environment. Though Apple's iWork suite in iOS lets you open and save files from some cloud storage services, the process is awkward and easily missed. Google's Quickoffice and Drive apps also let you share files with other iOS apps, including cloud-storage clients, but Google won't let you edit cloud-stored Drive files in its Quickoffice app for iOS or Android ... You're again forced to stay in a locked-down cloud storage environment... ... Overall, though, Office 365 is rarely better and sometimes worse than an environment that lets users mix their preferred apps and clients. That is progress for Microsoft, but not necessarily for all of us. All by design? IT is what we allow it to be... Why Microsoft Is Dumping Support For Windows 8.1 Most certainly FUD. The article it links to as "evidence" for dropping support for Windows 8.1 doesn't even mention dropping support. Sounds like a headline meant to grab a few clicks and make some money while scaring people into believing that if they buy Windows 8.1, they're not going to be supported. Pure, unadulterated FUD! [quote]Microsoft's new, new Windows cadence: Once a year is not enough What a way to put a negative spin on such a good move to provide better agility to the software development platform. This is no different than OS X's minor updates such as 10.9.3 - of which Mac users have to pay for! |

Microsoft may actually be on the right track with Windows 9 One criticism that I fully agree with here is the dumb naming schemes, as touched upon in the article: There's a dispute inside Microsoft about whether to call this version "Windows 8.2" or "Windows 8.1 Update 2." I personally favor the more accurate name "(Windows 8.1 Update) Update," or "81UpUp" for short, but doubt that'll gain much traction. (Seriously, the lack of clear branding in all of this belies a much greater Microsoft malaise and confuses the living wzorness out of customers. Microsoft couldn't make it more obtuse if it tried.) The first update to Windows 8 brought the name to Windows 8.1. The second update changes the name to Windows 8.1 Update 1 (with an Update 2 in the works). Now this one "might" be called Windows 9, or it might be called Windows 8.2 or possibly Windows 8.1 Update 2... ? Microsoft and their stupid naming conventions. Grr. |

Why Microsoft Is Dumping Support For Windows 8.1 In all the awesome positively awesomeness Marketing spin, you can be forgiven to have missed the implication of: Why Microsoft Is Dumping Support For Windows 8.1: ... The software giant is urging all Windows 8 and 8.1 users to upgrade now as any patches released in next month’s Patch Tuesday on May 13 “will be dependent on Windows 8.1 Update“. No Update means no further security patches will be installed... Update or die?... But what "Update" (noun, verb, adverb, adjective, Microsoft Marketing name or term)? IT is what we make it... Why Microsoft Is Dumping Support For Windows 8.1 What Microsoft is calling an "Update" these days is formerly what they used to call "Service Packs". Many late Windows XP patches required that you have at least Service Pack 3 installed. The same was true for many late Windows NT 4.0 patches after SP4 or SP6. In other words, this is non-news that you're trying to put a negative spin on, yet again. |

In all the awesome positively awesomeness Marketing spin, you can be forgiven to have missed the implication of: So, just to clarify my understanding if possible: "Windows 8" and "Windows 8.1" are now "no more" and are both "discontinued/unsupported". The new way is with something called "Windows 8.1 Update" whereby the "Update" is actually a part of the name for the OS version! In other words, this is non-news that you're trying to put a negative spin on, yet again. You must admit that is all completely silly confusing! Or is "update" such a dirty word for Microsoft that Marketing has dreamt up some other euphemism for the expected monthly update-reboot? (Just like the blue-screen BSOD is now modernized to some different colour?...) Sorry, but you cannot help but be suspicious as to what radical change has been made to force a change of name yet they can't for some reason do the expected thing of simply naming the latest twist "Windows 8.2"... Some curious Win snippets: Microsoft: The MORE Surfaces it sells, the MORE money it loses Win 8 slab sales eat their own revenues... ... Microsoft Thursday trumpeted $494m in revenue made from sales of Surface during its third fiscal quarter. But Microsoft also notched up $539m in costs associated with selling Surface, thereby cancelling out any profits and forcing it to post a loss... And yet may the Microsoft Marketing machine triumph yet? Microsoft's naughty Cortana NOT ALLOWED NEAR CHILDREN Microsoft's new Cortana personal assistant platform carries privacy concerns that prevent it from being used by children – but Redmond appears to not be alone in its pre-pubescent banishment... Brilliant marketing Its brilliant the marketing Microsoft done here. Name the personal assistant after an AI character in a game that appeals to a lot of kids in the 8-14 age bracket, then say they can't use it just making them want it more. Couple that with parent who don't give a crap about what their kids do, and will buy them anything to shut them up. I predict win 8 phones will start flying off the shelves due to this And for perhaps a more worrying twist: That's right, MICROSOFT is an ANDROID vendor after Nokia gobble ... Elop, who has returned to Redmond after almost a four-year absence to head up the software giant's new Devices Group, said in a blog post on Friday that we'll continue to see the same mix of Nokia-branded devices as before the acquisition – including ones that don't run Windows Phone... Elop is wrong - Microsoft won't sell Android phones Android runs a Linux kernel, distributed under the GPLv2. Section 7 of that licence says, amongst other things, :- if a patent license would not permit royalty-free redistribution of the Program by all those who receive copies directly or indirectly through you, then the only way you could satisfy both it and this License would be to refrain entirely from distribution of the Program. IOW, to distribute the kernel legally, Microsoft would have to grant a licence to those 200+ patents they claim Linux infringes, which kills their FUD campaign stone dead. So I'm pretty sure Micrososft will kill this line rather than lose their rights to rattle a sabre... All quite a mix. Quite interesting times. And all just my merely humble personal observation... IT is what we allow it to be... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

In all the awesome positively awesomeness Marketing spin, you can be forgiven to have missed the implication of: Windows 8.1 Update is mostly a "roll-up" package that contains all previous updates and two new ones. Windows 8.1 is already free to Windows 8 customers. Windows 8.1 Update is also free. Making Windows 8.1 Update the baseline for future patches is a way to make sure people are updating their OS. Also, from http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/springboard/archive/2014/04/02/windows-8-1-update-the-it-pro-perspective.aspx: It also becomes the new servicing baseline for Windows 8.1, so next month’s security updates (on May 13th, the next “Update Tuesdayâ€) will be dependent on Windows 8.1 Update. The statement only claims that next month's patches will be dependent on Windows 8.1 Update being installed. It says nothing about discontinuing support for Windows 8, nor does it say that all future updates will be written for Windows 8.1 Update only. I do not think it is safe to infer from that statement that Windows 8 customers are left out in the cold, however, they really should update their OS. The only safe inference I can make from that is that this may be a requirement for Windows 8.1, but again, since the update is free and mostly contains previously released updates, I see no reason or cause for alarm by making Windows 8.1 Update the baseline for future updates to Windows 8.1. In other words, this is non-news that you're trying to put a negative spin on, yet again. No, this is Microsoft trying to become more agile as a company and help ensure that the stuff they support and people use are updated in a timely fashion. (Just like the blue-screen BSOD is now modernized to some different colour?...) Actually the BSOD isn't "just" some other color, they changed the messages to be more user-friendly instead of just dumping debug code onto the screen that's only helpful to programmers. The dump is still written to a file so a technician can review the event and attempt to resolve. Sorry, but you cannot help but be suspicious as to what radical change has been made to force a change of name yet they can't for some reason do the expected thing of simply naming the latest twist "Windows 8.2"... Methinks you're being too suspicious of changes that need to happen. While I do agree with you that the naming thing sucks, I see no problem with Microsoft trying to make sure the software gets patched. |
