Unfortunately, it is only India that has hit the World headlines, and that was more because of the extreme violence rather than the rape itself.

Then one has to ask themselves....

..Why is that?

Why indeed...

Thus the Taliban are against ALL women:

"Escape from Taliban" author shot dead after returning to Afghanistan

An Indian author famous for her dramatic account of escaping Taliban-ruled Afghanistan nearly two decades ago, and who later returned to the country, has been shot dead by the hardline group after being dragged from her home.

It was the latest in a string of attacks and intimidation campaigns against prominent women...

... The Taliban apparently tracked her down to her old home and burst into the compound in the middle of the night. They dragged the 45 year-old away...

Jonathan Yeo portrait of Malala to go on display

A portrait of education campaigner Malala Yousafzai by Jonathan Yeo is to go on display for the first time at the National Portrait Gallery.

The 16-year-old was attacked by gunmen in Pakistan in 2012, following her campaign for girls to have the right to attend school.

Yeo said it was an "honour" to paint a portrait of "one of the most inspiring figures of our age"...

... "Given how much she has already been through and all that she represents to the world, it took a while to adjust to the fact that she is still a very fragile teenager.

"Hopefully the painting reflects the slight paradox of representing someone with enormous power and wisdom yet vulnerability and youth at the same time," he said.

The portrait will be auctioned later for Malala's charity fund, which campaigns for girls' rights to education. ...

Surprised that with the current news from India that this hasn't been picked up yet on these forums:

If you thought some of the atrocities against women and girls in Afghanistan was bad... Perhaps India and Pakistan hide a yet more grievous atrocity in their culture:

A long time later and is this the right step?

Four convicted for Delhi gang rape

Four men have been found guilty of the fatal gang rape of a student in the Indian capital Delhi last December.

The 23-year-old woman was brutally assaulted on a bus and died two weeks later.

Her death led to days of huge protests across India in a wave of unprecedented anger. The case forced the introduction of tough new laws to punish sexual offences. The four men are expected to be sentenced on Wednesday.

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta denied charges including rape and murder...

Delhi gang-rape verdict in 3 minutes, 3 days after guilty ruling; convicts get death

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Thakur will hang, a fast-track court pronounced on Friday, nine months after the four and two others destroyed the life of a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi and shook India’s conscience. ...

... three days after he had held the four guilty of the gang-rape and murder of the 23-year-old a paramedical student.

“The convicts be hanged by neck till they are dead.”

The judge added, “In these times when crime against women is on the rise, courts cannot turn a blind eye to such (a) barbaric and gruesome crime. There cannot be any tolerance. This crime in every way falls within the rarest of rare category warranting a death sentence.”

Gym instructor Vinay Sharma (20), fruit seller Pawan Gupta (19) and bus cleaner Akshay Thakur (28) howled in anguish, while fellow convict Mukesh Singh (26) stood stunned with folded hands. ...

Sadly, that looks to be very much the case:

India Delhi gang rape lawyer faces 'misconduct' hearing

The post-trial comments of a defence lawyer in the Delhi gang rape case amount to "professional misconduct", Delhi Bar Council vice-chairman Rakesh Sherawat has told the BBC. Mr Sherawat said AP Singh "could lose his licence for life if found guilty".

Mr Singh caused shock saying he would have "burned my daughter alive" if she was having "premarital sex and went out late at night with her boyfriend". ...

... Mr Singh, the lawyer for Akshay Thakur and Vinay Sharma, made his comments outside court on Friday after the judge sentenced his clients and two other men to death.

His remarks - which were taken to be referring to the 23-year-old victim murdered in last December's attack - have caused a furore in India. ...

All for just going to school:

Malala: The girl who was shot for going to school

One year ago schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen - her "crime", to have spoken up for the right of girls to be educated. The world reacted in horror... After weeks in intensive care Malala survived. Her full story can now be told...

And the "Taliban" still exist?!

Elsewhere in the world:

El Salvador: Where women may be jailed for miscarrying

El Salvador has one of the toughest anti-abortion laws in the world. A side-effect is that women who suffer miscarriages ... can even be jailed for murder...

Similarly, what's the medieval state of play for Ireland? Or have they slowly become a little more enlightened yet?

Abortion has been legal in Ireland since July, but only in cases where the life of the mother is deemed to be at risk.
It's a start, but still a way to go.

Well, she is right. They aren't locked into a chastity belt, wearing a burka and accompanied by an armed male relative, so of course they are at fault. As we know men are incapable of controlling themselves so allowing the merest hint of femininity to exist is the reason.

With her thought process I almost hope she gets some personal reason to reflect upon it.

I find myself agreeing with her on some points. Principally than there can't be a blanket assignment of guilt and innocence for such cases when said cases can be so varied in situation and motive.
Examples; Situation 1, man lies in wait in bush, shes lone woman walking past, drags her into hedge, beats her into compliance/unconsciousness, proceeds to have intercourse against her will.
Situation 2, woman meets man on night out, has too much to drink, invites man back to her place, has intercourse with man whilst in stupor, wakes up next morning, claims she was raped.

Now situation 1 is very clear, the man was at fault, the woman is innocent.
Situation 2 however, rather more ambiguous, yet both can be listed under the charge of rape, with an automatic presumption of guilt on the man, which i don't think is entirely fair. Such cases need to be judged on their own merits, rather than labelled.

For one positive turn-around resulting from public outcry:

Morocco amends controversial rape marriage law

The parliament of Morocco has unanimously amended an article of the penal code that allowed rapists of underage girls to avoid prosecution by marrying their victims.

The move follows intensive lobbying by activists for better protection of young rape victims. The amendment has been welcomed by rights groups.

Article 475 of the penal code generated unprecedented public criticism.

It wouldn't have happened under British rule that you can be assured of. We made a grave mistake in letting them get on with it on their own in 1947 leading to India and Pakistan independence. They have proven since that they are unfit to run their own affairs. And yet we consistently give them foreign aid, which even they say they don't want. The world was a better place when half the map was coloured pink, and that's a fact!

Apparently they're planning to phase out aid to India by 2015.
Why they need to phase it out i don't know, surely they could just stop sending it. Cancel the standing order or whatever the international aid equivalent is.

Women in India get a bad deal, and it's high time the rest of the world put a stop to it.

Oh what a delicious colonial attitude.

Oh and please, women still got a bad deal under British rule. British rule meant working on the background as much as possible, colonial administrators didn't give a hoot about women's right. And why would they, during that time women's rights in the west was either not a thing yet or it just started to happen.

Even so, British colonialism has not changed an ancient mindset of structural misogyny. Mostly because no one even bothered to change it.
