Well people, let's keep our fingers crossed that they can sort out the problem so that we can continue with our computations. Regards Juergen |

I'm setting my 3 computers to no new tasks until I see a fix posted. |

What will happen if anything to the WU's that are completed and just waiting to be uploaded back to SETI if this problem exists past the due date of said WU's ? Thanks and hope you get the problem fixed soon. Also are any of the SETI projects that are looking for signals in the Laser, Neutrino and other more advanced communication methods available as projects that might be going back thru older scans ? |

Who's the system administrator on the project? However to be a BOINC Project Administrator you would need the root password to install BOINC and that makes you the system admin by default. There are likely 6 persons with the root passwords to the dozens of Seti and other machines in the server closet. Campus IT, Eric, Jeff, Matt, Dr. A and Dr. W. Campus IT has it for political reasons but leaves it alone except by special request or security breach. Dr. W doesn't administer machines that I know of, but does the project, e.g. paper pusher. Dr. A administers if it is strictly BOINC related, as BOINC is his baby. Eric is the administrator in chief of Seti@home and SetiBeta. Jeff and Matt are the sysops and programmer/analysts. At least that is my take on the very loose org chart. ![]() ![]() |

However to be a BOINC Project Administrator you would need the root password to install BOINC and that makes you the system admin by default. Programmes would (or at least should) be installed as a user, no need to be an administrator. It's something Windows started doing with Vista onwards. If a higher lever of access is required they could be made a super user (or equivalent), still no need for Admin access. As far as a System Administrator goes, the closest to that at Seti@home would be Matt, even though it's not his actual job. As was mentioned (either in this thread or one of others) they would need $100,000 per year minimum to pay someone to work in that position. Grant Darwin NT |

Sorry to hear of the crash. No cloud has not returned, it will serve for a review and possible improvements! Siento mucho lo del crash. No hay mal que por bien no sea devuelto, esto servirá para una revisión y posibles mejoras! JR Marklin Valencia, Venezuela, South América |

However to be a BOINC Project Administrator you would need the root password to install BOINC and that makes you the system admin by default. Understand your confusion, we are talking the server side, not the client side. It doesn't run on Windows, it runs on linux. To install anything more than a trivial program on linux/Unix you need root access. The BOINC server software isn't trivial. ![]() ![]() |

Sorry the scheduler is down. Will continue to work on downloaded projects then will fill time with other projects. Will be delighted when the scheduler is up and running again. I noticed that my "join" date is wildly inaccurate. I joined in the mid 90's I believe but didn't get dsl until late 1999 so that may be the reason. Whatever the reason it had not diminished my enjoyment of participating. Lisa Marie |

Actually the project didn't start till around April 1999 if I remember correctly. Check Eric's start date in the first post. "Proud to be born and bred in Croydon" |

I am very new to this but I appreciate your letting those of us who are involved know that your computers will be down for awhile. I just hope it won't be too long. |

What will happen if anything to the WU's that are completed and just waiting to be uploaded back to SETI if this problem exists past the due date of said WU's ? BOINC allows a way to extend deadlines on the server; however, these extensions do not show on user computers. Perhaps Eric can find a way to extend all deadlines of workunits still in progress by the duration of the outage? Some BOINC projects also allow returning workunits after the deadline if the required number of copies have not already been returned by someone else; I don't know if SETI@Home is doing this, but with no workunits available for download, there's little of a chance anyone will be able to return competing copies first. |

Perhaps looking at advanced communication methods like lasers, or even neutrino emissions might be promising.. Don't know the answer only that our RF search has som many "depends on" that it's probability is very very unlikely. But they can be made valid by taking out the extra quote marks. |

Still waiting The Scheduler has been active for over 12 hours, though very difficult to actually contact. Waiting is not a bad idea, but most of the hosts on the project will be trying to report and get work in normal BOINCish fashion. If anyone has work past deadline which has been completed and uploaded but not yet reported, I suggest abusing the update button to get it reported. Otherwise a replacement will go out to another host, and if that extra task is reported before yours the work your host did will be wasted. Joe |
