Growing up & going to school throughout the 1960's in East London, where the effects of the bombing during WWII were still visible, times were hard for everyone. However, the system worked (well, it seemed that way at least). Police were police, hospitals were "Real" hospitals & the Civil Service played its role & if memory serves me correctly, efficiently at that. During my time at school, the curriculum was split into 3 sections: technical/business/domestic studies & within these catergories, further sub-catergories were available. The teaching standards were pretty good, with the teachers aware of their pupils strengths & weaknesses & often guided them into the correct catergory that suited their skill/aptitude/mindset. In fact one classmate went on to become a U.N Interpreter, whether or not she is still in that role is unknown 40 years later. I do know that our language teachers were excellent with many of their pupils going on to become well paid translators - shame that it can no longer be said of our current system...... Court Interpreter checks "non-existent" Police count the cost of migrants MP Attacked MP attacker charged Whatever happened to common sense? |

Hi, this is Mrs SB, SB was rushed to the hospital at 18:03 this evening. He suffered a seizure which left him speechless :) Pre-fabs - yep, had plenty of those in East London which were finally replaced in the early 70's. Even those were well maintained by the residents & often with their little gardens well cared for. I think that was known as "community spirit" which has been replaced by selfishness & greed in today's societies as the same issues that are affecting many today, were at the fore back then as well. As for the press, there were many events, both good & bad occurring but there was no "tabloid sensationalism" - JFK/RFK & MLK assassinations, the space program, the Krays & Richardsons, the Great Train Robbery & of course the World Cup, not forgetting the Mandy Rice-Davies/Christine Keeler scandal. People made do with what they had & saved for those things they wanted/needed, no pieces of plastic back then. So what's changed? IMV, it's a nasty little matter called "instant gratification" Must have that - Can't afford it? Well just loot it instead! And, what makes matters worse for a lot of people is "little old victorians with a very gentle nature" stating that they would organise a whip round for a one-way ticket back to Ireland...tut tut tut. Can you get better organised & start arranging whip rounds for those in the links in OP? Pretty sure the police would welcome your assistance.... :) |

2. Too many USA thoughts and ideas filtered over from across the pond. Heeeyyyyy!!!! if I weren't such a couch potato, I'd... well I'd like some more ice cream and violence on TV please. Is Dr. Who on? Seriously, its called stigma. The stigma of being gay, black, poor, unwed mother, welfare for life went away. Now its chic to have a poor gay black unwed mother thats never going to get off welfare for a friend. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

1. The loony left were in charge of UK education for far too long and did irrevocable damage. Guess you didn't read my latest post in your "Parents in Classes?" thread? |

Yes I did see it! If you followed the link, and investigated, you'd find it came from an organization that is in the US and supposedly loony left. |

What an amazing quote! It seems your politicial masters disagrees with you. They seem to love part time gamblers: - "The Department of Culture in January announced an extra £500m from the national lottery for sport. The DCMS revealed lottery projections from December 2011 showed that total income for sport between 2012-13 and 2016-17 was expected to be £1.8bn, up from the £1.3bn forecast in September 2010". However do give him our best regards whilst he is unwell, and we look forward to his eventual return to be castigated again. Once again your arrogance shines through, or should that be ignorance? What is it with your ilk? Hate to have the worms in the salad on display in the No 1 restaurant known as "Cookthebooks UK"? What's the matter? Too scared to mention or even act on the issues raised by people like me in case your new found friends in the Police & Parliament might mistake you for a racist? No guts to stand up for your country when unbridled immigration is fecking it up? But you condescend to continue to knock down & insult those who do so? When the police were 2 seperate divisions: - crime (blue vehicles) & traffic (white vehicles) there were not many incidents such as these..... Wrong way M6 driver jailed Please put your spectacles on & look at the size of that vehicle! Had that incident resulted in fatalities, I don't think your condolences would be any way helpful to those families that would have lost relatives! |

Well if you want to leave the world, this could help you....as you're serving no useful purpose on the planet......asides from knocking down your so called friends for the past year or so..... I love the comedy team Chris & Sirius have put together. Their good-natured ribbing of each other, along with at least some easily shot down claims ... this is hilarious stuff! :) |

Comedy show? Really? From an ingerlander who cherry picks the posts he replies to? Where does it show that I'm not serious? FYI, I'm deadly serious in that I've come across many self righteous inglish scumbags over the past 40 years & find it sad they're still are some left in the country. Well, they do say a leopard doesn't change it's spots. No nastiness or bad temper, who are you trying to kid? So tell us then. Never mind what ill gotten gains you might have made, just how much cash did you lay out in bets before the games started? Still waiting for your reply to the comment made to the above post. |

I dont know if you guys are kidding or not. Id say not! So keep it civil or it gets locked for a bit. James, Chris and Sirius are the fora's very own Statler and Waldorf. Any disagreements are soon settled. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

I saw the same documentary, part two was about airliners. The Vickers VC10 which was retired from passenger use in 1980. Still holds the record for the fastest subsonic (ie not Concord) crossing of the Atlantic from London to JFK. It was pensioned off along with the British aircraft industry because BOAC (BA now) liked the Boeing 707 because it could carry more passengers, despite Vickers having built the VC10 to BOAC's specification. Britain was great once and we we first in a lot of fields. Sadly no longer. |

It all started with Harold Wilson's post 1964 Labour Government, with the cancellation of - Black Knight Blue Steel The TSR2 swing winged bomber in favour of the US F111 (which was never delivered). It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |
