After successfully installing Mint 13 & various software I need, checked it all out & it's running the way I want it. Next task was to install boinc. Which was done via the software manager & boinc installed (7.0.24 for Linux). Attached to Seti successfully & it downloaded 54 tasks. However after the downloads completed, all 54 tasks errored out after 3 secs of running with a 193 exit code. Stderr output <core_client_version>7.0.24</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> process exited with code 193 (0xc1, -63) </message> <stderr_txt> Stack trace (12 frames): /usr/bin/boinc(boinc_catch_signal+0x7b)[0x80d6bab] [0x5ff400] /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(__strcat_chk+0x3d)[0x6fde1d] /usr/bin/boinc[0x805a063] /usr/bin/boinc[0x805a12a] /usr/bin/boinc[0x807850f] /usr/bin/boinc[0x8078d67] /usr/bin/boinc[0x8061eb0] /usr/bin/boinc[0x80b8b61] /usr/bin/boinc[0x804d3d9] /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xf3)[0x6194d3] /usr/bin/boinc[0x804d581] </stderr_txt> ]]> What caused these? |

After successfully installing Mint 13 & various software I need, checked it all out & it's running the way I want it. You are on a 32-bit system? All 32-bit code? I tried 7.0.24 for Linux on an old 64-bit Linux system and Boinc errored out on that due to there being no appropriate OpenSSL libraries available... Yet boinc 6.xxx runs fine on that same system... Some unique funky unlisted dependency in the Boinc 7.0.24? Happy crunchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Yep all 32 bit Martin. As for the unlisted dependency I don't know as even though I'm able to install & run linux, not very knowledgeable of it. Edit: & until I can get this issue resolved, I've set it to NNT as I'd rather crunch successfully than waste time. Edit 2: would it be worth installing Lunatics Installer? |

Yep all 32 bit Martin. As for the unlisted dependency I don't know as even though I'm able to install & run linux, not very knowledgeable of it. Well... The dependencies should be listed as part of the package build and they then all get taken care of automatically. Just in case there might be a packaging omission... Make sure you also have got installed "curl" and "OpenSSL"? Good luck, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Looks like the same issue as Ubuntu had, a bad build in the repository. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=67864 |

Yep, the Ubuntu/ Boinc 7.0.24 strikes again. (Mint13 is built off Ubuntu 12.04) :-( Still waiting for the Ubuntu folks to fix that package. It's on their to-do list. So I expect it right around..... never? who knows. #resist |

... Just in case there might be a packaging omission... Make sure you also have got installed "curl" and "OpenSSL"? I'm guessing that got you going? Hopefully the underlying package will get fixed. Might be worth bumping up the bug report for it at Ubuntu and Mint. ... Just in case there might be a packaging omission... Make sure you also have got installed "curl" and "OpenSSL"? Yep, got Boinc running with Dave's help. However on installing rdesktop, ongoing action completed to 100%, & thinking it was installed, checked & find it is not. Same happened with krdc. Goinf to try Dave's suggestion with Remmina. |

Yep, the Ubuntu/ Boinc 7.0.24 strikes again. (Mint13 is built off Ubuntu 12.04) :-( Hey! Why the negativity? Have you given a bump/prompt to the buglist? 'Important' bugs get fixed very quickly. The not-so-important stuff may well get left unless someone takes an interest in fixing it. Also, Berkeley updates boinc often enough that the effort for a bug fix is likely being held off until whatever next boinc version. Meanwhile, I'm guessing the easy fix is to just manually also ensure you have curl and OpenSSL installed on your system. I've been heavily involved with the Ubuntu end of this bug, in addition I also follow the Debian maintainer's mailing list and bug watch very closely. The issue with Ubuntu is 1) They are busy changing out other stuff, and as Boinc is not part of the core OS, they have not prioritized it very high. There is still the question if they will choose the 7.0.27 package for the change, or if they will wait longer and SRU with a later version. There are some other minor bugs with even 7.0.27 that they may want to take a look at before making a change. Like the boincmgr menu being covered by a grey/black bar until you resize the window, for example. I do not have a negative attitude, but it is slightly frustrating to have pointed out the issue to them in April, and still not see a fix.. Especially considering 'locutus' and myself took some time and figured out exactly which patch in 7.0.24 was the culprit. They could have just recompiled the existing package for a band-aid... #resist |

Now now guys....you've both assisted an MS Fanboy over to the "dark side"... keep it clean .... :) Thanks for those linux remote links Martin, got krdc installed....boy, what a pleasure after attempting to get a rdp issue with my workstation resolved by MS for the past 19 months. i've been busy copying the VHD of mint 13 to my laptop, closed mint down on main rig & booted up mint on latop via VM & got instant access to ALL rigs on network, including all 3 servers... .....Ah Bisto! What joy. This "dark side" is looking good...................... Edit: Once fully tested, will definitely be removing Win 7 Home from laptop & installing Mint. However, once I've really got to grips with Linux, can a Linux server run virtualisation? |

Oh boy can they. My vms all run in my server, (though I may run a windows VM inside my linux laptop as well eventually) Your choices are VMware which is an AWESOME program, though somewhat difficult to compile in Linux for a noob, or even someone like me a few years in... There are tutorials out there but it gets messy. But you can install virtualbox in Ubuntu very easy as that software is true open-source and in their repository. sudo apt-get install virtualbox the end. (Well see below for advance functions and better performance.) It can run it's gui (virtualbox), you can also start machines headless (vboxheadless) and call them with remote desktop connections (rdp) from other machines, I do it this way. They run headless in my server 24-7, and when I need to access one I just fire up Remina (in Linux) or Windows RDP viewer in windows7, and access it by host machine IP, and proper port#. More side notes about further steps for virtualbox: Once you install virtualbox, you will want to get the extensions package, (it contains proprietary drivers and cannot be kept in the repository as such). You just download the virtualbox extensions from their website, and open the download with virtualbox (right click?) and virtualbox will install it without you ever touching a command line. You will also need to download the 'guest additions' for your version of virtualbox from their website, as those guest OS drivers also contain proprietary software and cannot be included with the repository install. #resist |

Thanks again Dave. When ready to build a Linux server I'll use VMware as I've been using their software since v1 of VM workstation & pretty much know it inside out, currently on v8 - it really is a great package. I'll see what they're charging for the Linux version & if reasonable, will go with that (don't really fancy learning a new package). |

Vmware server and Vmware player are free. I suppose however a paid version of whatever from them, would have support for installing included, that could be nice. Because compiling the free packages is somewhat of a nightmare with Debian unfortunately. (Yes I said something negative about my Linux of choice, lol) #resist |

I am using Virtual Box on my Linux box because it is needed to install the Test4Theory@home BOINC project, which runs CERN programs written in a Scientific Linux environment. So all Windows users and Mac OSX users can run those Scientific Linux programs, simulating proton-proton collisions via MonteCarlo. Tullio |

Yep you can use VirtualBox as a background process running a small linux kernel, for any number of tasks. Virtualization and Emulation in general are very fascinating to me for some reason. I am almost obsessed with both. A lot of ppl give flack to VirtualBox, I'm not really sure why as it's really decent. (Lemme check here, yep- even after a brownout last night which reset most of my equipment, my server kept chugging along, and yes my VMs are all still running in Virtualbox happily. Up since my last server reboot a couple weeks ago). VMWare is an awesome program too, but for me virtualbox works just fine. And they have guest additions for Win2k-Win7, and many flavors of Linux, that pretty much covers it. #resist |

I am running Solaris 11 64-bit (there is not any 32-bit version) on my Virtual Box. Unfortunately, there is only a BOINC client by Dotsch and a SETI@home app for Solaris X86. Tullio |

Finally got all tasks from various projects completed on main workstation with boinc shutdown. Switching over to Mint VM,have a large no of wu's to be completed but no problem there with any deadline yet. Wanting to add asteroids@home as they only have a linux version atm, find that the menu toolbar is missing from boinc (File-View-Activity-Advanced-Help). Id this an issue with 7.0.24 for linux or a problem with the boinc installation at my end? |

Finally got all tasks from various projects completed on main workstation with boinc shutdown. This is a known bug in 7.0.24. You can install 7.0.31 via this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/boinc |
