(USS)IOWA(BB-61, she has a Tub in the Head that was made for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, at one point there was a drill that went a little askew and a torpedo was fired towards the IOWA with President Roosevelt aboard, You would not want to be on the ship that the IOWA aimed Her NINE 16" guns at in what looked like an assassination attempt on the President of the US, thankfully it was just a malfunction in a torpedo launcher on a Destroyer, can you say Gulp?) scrub I saw the story on that errant torpedo a few weeks ago. Not a malfunction, a screw-up on the part of the torpedo launcher crew. As I recall, it was an exercise weapon (dummy warhead), but it still was NOT supposed to be launched. Communications breakdown. Couple guys lost stripes, Destroyer Captain got yelled at (FDR supposedly said "no harm, no foul" so nothing worse happened). Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |
