HMS Queenie or USS Gerry, they are still just great big targets to a submarine. Yeah, usually an attack sub goes along with a battle group, recently the Teddy was "sunk" by a Dutch sub in a war game, better to be prepared now than not. Better ring that asset with a half dozen heavy cruisers and ring each of them with a dozen destroyers and ring each of them with a dozen destroyer escorts, and toss in some subs, mine sweepers some tenders and tankers. Now you have a battle group or as some would call it a target rich environment. |

Nah, we're barely replacing that 50 year old carrier Enterprise with the FORD which is about 75% complete, Besides I thought that the UK is building the Queen Elizabeth carrier? Still quite a few years to go before she's completed... Surface Surface Go wring yourself Mr Alarm Clock I don`t care if its miday, Three down One to go before normality is restored, Apart for the litter pickers, who will be busy for days, And the trafic cone lifters who are `not` finding all of them. It no longer amazes me what a zombie can do with a trafic cone . . . . |

And then the QE is conventionally powered, the ships fuel is going to take up a good amount of space, on the Ford 2 Reactors replace Enterprises 8 old Reactors, of course the ship is about 1092' long by about oh 134'/256' and the range is unlimited or between 20 to 25 Years @ 30+ knots... Also the QE has no steam, hence no catapults, and need to embark F35C fighter jets, very costly, no F18. Tullio |

Also the QE has no steam, hence no catapults, and need to embark F35C fighter jets, very costly, no F18. Neither do the Fords, all Catapults are non-steam, as they use or will use the following once completed. No the QE looks like It has a ski jump Carriers of the Ford class will incorporate design features including:[5] Advanced arresting gear.[6] Automation, which reduces crew requirements by several hundred from the Nimitz class carrier. The updated RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow missile system.[7] AN/SPY-3 dual-band radar (DBR), as developed for Zumwalt class destroyers. An Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) in place of traditional steam catapults for launching aircraft.[6] A new nuclear reactor design (the A1B reactor) for greater power generation. Stealthier features to help reduce radar profile. The ability to launch the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and the F-35C Lightning II The UK can't seem to make up its bloody mind on planes or catapults for the Queen... As originally intended, the aircraft selected to be used on the carriers is the Short Take Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 Lightning II, known as the F-35B. On 19 October 2010, David Cameron had announced that the UK would change their order to the carrier variant (F-35C) and that the carrier design would be modified to use a catapult launch and arrestor recovery (CATOBAR) system to allow for the launch and recovery of these aircraft.[16] This was because the F-35C variant has a greater range and the ability to carry a larger and more diverse payload.[17] However, on 10 May 2012 Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced in Parliament that the government had decided to revert to its predecessor's plans to purchase the F-35B rather than the F-35C, and to abandon the completion of Prince of Wales to a CATOBAR configuration.[18] The reason given was that, "conversion to ‘cats and traps’ will cost about double what was originally estimated – and would not be delivered until 2023 at the earliest." Thanks for correcting me. I've read that all UK Harriers have been sold to the US Marine Corps, happy to have them for a fraction of the cost of the F35B. The Italian Navy is using the Harrier on its Garibaldi and Cavour ships. Tullio |
