What the Frack is a swamp coller is that Alien technology ? :)

I will let Vic answer that.

Welcome to the boards Des.

Vic isn't the only person around here to have used one. My parents own two of the things. However, they won't work here - too humid.

Popcorn is a feast of molecules in combination as an object.

Combustability is a function of individual molecules and there component atoms and bond structure yet in popcorn each component molecule preserves its own characteristic tendacy to oxidise.

So in the case of popety corn the mono and disaccherides oxdise way ahead of the starches ( and other polmeric sacharides) so it burns if you screw up the cooking process.

The easy solutions is to order a your popcorn as a take away !

Im not sure I want a reply regarding what a swamp cooler is. We dont have swamps in England we have bogs ( a totally differnet kettle of fish) and anyways I still totally occupied withe the vagaries of slow cooking vegetables !

As John said, You couldn't use one there, mine is on right now of course, otherwise it would be a bit beastly in here now with the PC and the TV running and the GTX590 wouldn't like it too much either.

I live in a Desert, so the evaporative cooler works very well, except on humid days, like around when a Thunderstorm happens, which is predicted for Wednesday of this week out here.

Do you think, Des, we will ever solve this mystery of why water does not burn?

I have reached a Zen moment on this topic ....take a match to water Frack all happens !

Apply a differential current to it ie electroylsis) and it dissasociates into hydrogen and oxgen... apply a match and voila mystry solved ...it burns explosively..its all about orders of magnitude.

Im thinking there might be a market for BOg Cooler sin the UK though.

After giving this subject some deep thought, I came up with this explanation.

The burning process in the case of oxygen and hydrogen is relatively simple. If you put together suitable volumes of hydrogen and oxygen and provide a spark to start the reaction, one oxygen atom will combine with two hydrogen atoms, and will release energy in the process. The energy gets released in the form of molecular kinetic energy, and since the motion is random, this is exactly what we call heat energy. The gases heat up, and as all expanding gases do, they expand. That fast expansion of hot gases is what we call "an explosion".

What is the result of this burning/explosion? The answer is simple, if the proportions were right (one volume of oxygen for two volumes of hydrogen gas) all you get is water! Thus, water is _already burnt_. It is the "ashes" of hydrogen after it has burned.

If you wish to burn it again, you have to separate oxygen and hydrogen. But, to do that, you need to supply as much energy as is released when the burning occurred. This is possible by electrolysis.

...I have to be honest, I actually I got this off the net...

Second law of thermodynamics - you can't break even. You have to supply more than you could actually scavenge from the burning.

True Kite and in realtion to popety corn we are observing a a gradient chemical transition an oxidation rather than a expolisve combustion. One which involves realtively stable carbon based molecules combined with oxygen and hydrogen forming simpler compounds with a different colour and visiual appearance . Application of heat breaks covalent bonds and other associations ...leaving manky black carbon as an ultimate product ...burning.

You can't burn water in a domestic microwave because they aren't powerful enough. You need a nuclear powered microwave oven and crank it up to full and it will burn anything.

Including the microwave most likely. Introducing our resident Batman, ;), but with a bunch of Jokers, ;), One has to be here somewhere.
