Hi

I'm posting to introduce myself to this community.

My name is Des and I live and work in England as a microbiologist.

Participating in this project means a lot to me because I never thought I would be able to. As a younger man I was inspired by the visionary ideas of Carl Sagan (Comos) and fell of my chair when I discovered the seti project :)

I'm doing fine racking up work ( Part of the Warkick University team) so its all good.

I look forward to getting to know the posters here and continuing to contribute to this project.

Best Wish Des O'Connor

Welcome Des, you have fine credentials.
Yet before either Chris S' or Sirius come out with it, "Your not going to start singing, are you"?

As you can gather, Des, we like to show our humour here across the threads but
I can tell you, "Plenty of topics get discussed seriously here at times".
There are some very knowledgeable members here at Seti, it's a fine group to be
a member of...the stage is now yours. If you wont one of those green stars by
your name then you have to make a donation to Seti, only a small amount needed,
if you look-up Uli she will tell how to do it.

Wow a real scientist, and
welcome to the group. So help me
out here. When you leave pop corn
in the microwave oven for too
long it will start to burn.
If you leave water in too long
why doesn’t it start to burn?

Thanks for the welcomes

I do actully write music as a hobby, piano music but I have no desire at this time to impale folks on my stuff..may be at some pointi i might post a piece to the sonic section of seti if it isnt absolutely arse paralysing !

I do intend to fund Seti through my business and I have to address that with the board before we do it...I will make a personal contribution before that is finalised....why not :)

Pop corn contains oxidisable substances. The sugars caramalise due to the effects of microwave heating while other organic molecules "char". Water mealy evapourates when elosed to microvaves :)

I think the reason is because water is a molecule so can't be further reduced to
a state where it can burn.

Water will "burn" if dissosiated into Hydrogen and oxgen atoms...both are highly combustable !

Ah though, at that point then it would not be water anymore?
Hydrogen possesses no carbon but it does burn though.
You've started something now, Celt....

That's most probably because it isn't a molecule in it's natural state.
I'm sure being a molecule has something to do with it's non-burnability.

A swamp cooler does not work in England (or anywhere else it is humid). The idea is to take dry air, blow it through a wet cloth and cool the dry air through evaporation. Typically it involves a cloth belt around two rollers, one of which is in a tank of water. A fan blows through the cloth belt.
