Going to be lots of fun digging down 40 feet with old bombs at the 20 foot level. Yep, but if Cameron does the job right, they'll be RAF BD teams there. |

Going to be lots of fun digging down 40 feet with old bombs at the 20 foot level. RAF don't have a bomb disposal teams, most probably be No.11 Army Bomb Disposal sent out from RAF Northolt where their based. RAF good at dropping 'em down but no good at mopping 'em up. Going to be lots of fun digging down 40 feet with old bombs at the 20 foot level. As long as they make sure none explode & wipe out the Spits. |

As long as they make sure none explode & wipe out the Spits. If there were any bombs then they would have come across them when digging through the first 20 feet prior to burying the spits. We have one guy here that built a 'Spit' (not an original - kit plane designed to look like one). It's the same size as the original, though. |

Unless they planted them after burying them. |

Now It would be great if someone would recall burying a few Mosquitoes... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

When my daughter was stationed at RAF Lakenheath in 2002, we visited her and made a trip to the Imperial War Museum. They had a spitfire there and I must say its one beautiful aircraft. Id love to hear that merlin engine at full power. [/quote] Old James |

Id love to hear that merlin engine at full power. Hear it every week from May to September....lovely sound...but those Merlins sound even better when the lanc fly over. Where we are now living, it's directly in the flight path to & from most air shows so hopefully, not only will i gett better photos but some good videos as well. If I manage that, I'll post them for you. |

Just wish they could find some Hurricanes as well .... They have been finding many over the past decade Chris, but unfortunately, they were too badly damaged. |

I thought this story might pique the interest of some hanging about this place...LOL. Certainly mark. As soon as I find out anything I'll post it if it's not already been posted. The Spit, Hurrie & Lanc really do capture people's imagination & hearts. However, don't forgot that the US had some terrific aircraft as well - the "Widowmaker" for example.....lovely aircraft. |

Update for you Mark. They've been confirmed as Mk 14's with the Rolls Royce Griffin 65 engines... Mk 14's He does state that they got a look, id'ed them as Mk 14's & said they're in a good condition. We'll know more when they dig them up. |

I'm a young lad (a whippersnapper if you will :)) and I think the Spitfires are an absolute fantastic aircraft. I consider them a pinnacle of engineering, made during a time of big demands, limited resources, limited time and what was the result? The Spitfire. An aircraft you don't want on your tail :) Thinking about the preservation of them, if I'm not mistaken there was a lot of aluminium used in their construction. I am part of the Precious Metal Air Race Team. PM IS a P-51 with a RR Griffon out of a shackleton bomber. PM has the contra rotating props and make a sound like no other. She is pretty fast also, we are thinking the 480 is within our reach this year. Thom Richards, the current owner, is 100% committed to get his bird to the 500mph mark and I will be a part of that. The sound of a merlin or a griffon at full throttle and 105+ inches boost is second to none. |

The wing of the spit isnt as fast as the wing on the 51, plus the 51 had alot better range. Dont get me wrong, the spit is a beautiful aeroplane and I would love to see one again. |
