Ok so my seti is up and i was wondering how it works like aren't you suppose to hear something and what do the numbers mean

Nope, you won't hear anything. All this program does is process data.
(there is the boinc screensaver, which gives a graphical representation on the data, this is only available on windows versions AFAIK.)
If in "advanced view" in boinc manager, you will be able to see the WUs (work units) being processed in the "tasks" tab.
The numbers: "Credits" are given for completed verified [processed] work units. Credits are not worth anything, just for comparison between other users and as a gauge of how much work you've completed in total, daily, for other projects, etc.

Someone else came along here not too long ago, expecting seti@home to be a little more "interactive". Around here were just running programs that process the data for seti@home and other projects.

But there is SETIlive. I'm not personally familiar with it, but it is definitely interactive.
