Hi HAL9000 Don't you just love DOS :-) If I had camtasia, I'd record the results to show I wasn't imagining the whole thing ! Gary. |

While some people may wish to delete all traces of BOINC from a computer, I'd be very wary about running a script like this which makes in-depth changes to the registry. In particular, as HAL9000 says, the SIDs (security identifiers) and GUIDs may well be specific to your particular installation or a particular version of BOINC: the script will not, in general, be transferrable from machine to machine. Which installers would you want to check on which OS's? I do software testing for a living and work in a test lab. I can bang that out in a few minutes on I have the required info. Based on Gary's first post I'll do a check on 6.12.34 & 7.0.8 in Vista x86 as an admin and as a user seeing which options are enabled be default. Based on Gary's first post I'll do a check on 6.12.34 & 7.0.8 in Vista x86 as an admin and as a user seeing which options are enabled be default. Obviously, it would be good to test v7.0.8/Vista to see if you can reproduce Gary's problem - which I think we can categorise as "BOINC installs in PAE/service mode even when instructed to install in user mode" - maybe only if it was installed deliberately as PAE at some time in the past? If you are able to reproduce that, could you please re-run the test with v7.0.15, or whatever has bubbled to the top of http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D by then? We know of at least one new-ish bug in these later installers (starting with v7.0.7) - the option to run the BOINC Manager immediately after installation has vanished from the 'finish' page. Rom doesn't know how he did that, and is anxious to fix it - if Gary's bug appears in the same versions, it might give him some new ideas of places to look. But I've gone through pretty well all the versions from v7.0.8 to v7.0.15 on Windows 7, and it has installed properly in user mode every time. Afterthought - perhaps the most likely failure mode is to install v7.0.6 or earlier in PAE mode, then try to install v7.0.8 or later in user mode - either as an upgrade (my usual route), or by uninstall/reinstall. |

Well, no sign of any trouble there - exactly what I would have expected. Many thanks for testing. I wonder what on earth could have gone wrong on Gary's machine? |

Thanks for all the testing you're doing. I didn't anticipate causing so much work :-( I've had the same issue before with other versions of BOINC. I tried BOINC 7.x this time to see if installing a completely different version would overwrite the previous settings. I usually also turn off the "allow all users of the machine to administer boinc" option, because most of the machines I use are on a Windows domain network. Gary. |

Thanks for all the testing you're doing. I didn't anticipate causing so much work :-( I'm beginning to wonder whether you might be reading the sense of those checkboxes the wrong way round? One of the other minor bugs we've been complaining about is that "allow all users" is always defaulted to off, even for people to choose to enable it. For your environment, you should never need to change that one? |

Hi Richard. I hope I haven't mis-understood the PE tick box. I tick it to allow processing while I'm logged out. In the last year-or-so, I've started to untick it on machines where I'm pretty much always logged in, to allow GPU use. I've always cleared the "allow all users" tick box, thinking that would prevent other users from chaning the BOINC settings. Gary. |
