Message 1180472 - Posted: 24 Dec 2011, 17:12:15 UTC - in response to Message 1180294.

If you fail, you find me two volunteers to help me write grants and proposals.

Succeed and I will kick in 100 bucks to the astropulse server fundraiser.

I can only afford to pledge $10 right now, but I may be able to increase that in a couple of weeks. It's certainly a worthy cause (not to say that Seti isn't one already).

I am seriously overweight, and I am *VERY* glad I never started smoking because I would have two major strikes against me. I'm also a very light drinker (weeks in between). A few years ago, I lost 50 pounds during the summer and held it until the next spring, but then my stress increased and I started telling myself I deserved that Italian beef/sausage combo with cheese fries and onion rings (while driving 40 miles at night, no less). Now I'm trying again. I may have lost 9 pounds in a month.

Anyway, I wish you luck, for the kitties' sake as well as yours.

David

Time is drawing near....
If I added correctly, I have $500.00 in pledges, of which $50.00 has already been paid.
Keep 'em coming.......
I don't intend to lose this one.

Put me in for $100.
I guess I will need to add you to our prayer list since we already added Lori.
This is a bet I really hope to pay out on; SETI and you will both benefit.
Good Luck quitting.

Up to $690.00...and just a few days more 'till my last ciggy butt.
Truth be told, I am both dreading this and looking forward to it.
I believe that after all these years, I finally have my mind made up.
And I know it's not going to be a walk in the park, but I also know that if I can make it through just one or two weak moments and 'just say no' it shall be a done deal.

Thanks for the monetary Seti support and the words of support as well.

Keep 'em both coming, please!

Meow.

I've got a couple friends that supposedly quit, but when they drink they smoke, so alcohol may be your enemy.

Also, I recommend stocking up on sugarless gum. Keep your mouth busy and you might have less inclination to light up :p

Mark,
I don't know anyone who actually quit by 'giving up for a month'. So I will donate £25, or 'as near as dammit is to swearing' in dollars, to Seti@home, but only when you actually give up smoking completely as I did back in the '70s.

One month's 'smoking adjournment' is simply not giving up. Everyone I know who successfully gave up smoking was able to say "I don't smoke any more", not "I am giving up for a month".

If you are still a non-smoker once you get to the end of February, a full 29 day month after you have achieved your own goal. Then You will stand a good chance of having quit for good. That way, not only Seti@Home wins, but so do you.

I think I am. Therefore I am. I think.

My brother Sergio, a merchant marine captain, smoked up to 40 cigarettes a day. When skiing on the Gran Risa slope, where a Giant Slalom event is run every year, he broke his leg. The doctors advised him: if you don't stop smoking your bones will never join. So he stopped smoking and is now, retired, in Genoa, aged 77 and soon 78, in good health. But his wife still smokes, like many women do in Italy.

What else do the ladies do in Italy?

I shall never go there, so you can tell me. LOL.

Yes you can :D
My mother smoke for 38 years and quit 10 years ago, and she is very well on these days. I´m pretty sure you have all the motivation you need around you, but here is some more.

I disagree Chris. The step-down method doesn't work for EVERYONE. I stopped 10 years ago cold-turkey-never smoked again.

When Sattler has been completely smoke free for 6 months straight, I will give as part of this fundraiser.

However you go about it, just quit smoking. Cigarettes killed both of my dad's parents entirely too early in their lives.
